Stockholm/Berlin/London- The international ‘Start Up Energy Transition’ (SET) initiative invites young and innovative companies around the world to apply for the SET Award 2020. The fourth year of the awards for business ideas in energy transition and climate protection was launched at a kick-off event in Stockholm, Sweden. Applications are welcomed and submissions are open until 15th January 2020 at www.startup-energy-transition.com. Over the past three years, over 1300 start-ups from 88 countries have taken part.

The award is an initiative of the German Energy Agency (dena) in cooperation with the World Energy Council. The event in Stockholm was organised in cooperation with the German-Swedish Chamber of Commerce and the Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten). This year’s award is supported by country partner, Sweden and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

Andreas Kuhlmann, Chief Executive of dena, said: “We are looking for the best business ideas for climate protection and energy transition worldwide. All participants can benefit from our large and inspiring SET network. I am looking forward to the new applicants. Every start-up dedicated to promoting clean energy is most welcome to join our initiative.

Applications can be submitted in five different categories:  1. Renewable Energies & Materials, 2. Digital Energy Systems, 3. Energy Efficiency Solutions, 4. Smart Mobility, 5. Special Prize: Quality Access & SDG-7. In each category, the three most promising applicants will be invited to pitch their ideas at the annual summit of the SET Global Innovation Platform, the SET Tech Festival, in Berlin on 24 March 2020.

Christoph Frei, Secretary General of the World Energy Council, commented: “SET start-ups are a great source of inspiration on our transformative journey into the energy future. The energy sector has great hunger and pressure to innovate and the brightest innovators need partnerships to realise their ambitions. The World Energy Council has shown with its recent Congress that it is uniquely placed to facilitate such partnerships with its network, events, and market insights.

Robert Andrén, Director General Swedish Energy Agency, added: “Our joint mission is to accelerate the energy transition by supporting green energy solutions with big impact, through concrete efforts such as Startup Energy Transition and Swedish German Cleantech Platform. Germany is a key Partner for us and I am looking forward to continuing to develop our collaborations further.
