Transit Systems Expert Michael Lee Joins HNTB as Senior Rail Systems Manager and West Division Systems Group Lead

OAKLAND, Calif. – Michael Lee joined HNTB Corporation in Northern California as senior rail systems manager and West Division systems group lead. Based in HNTB’s Oakland office, Lee supports the firm’s work on some of the most complex transit systems projects throughout the region.

Lee brings more than 30 years of experience in a broad range of technically challenging rail projects, including specialized expertise in light rail transit, high-speed rail and conventional rail systems. 

In his role with HNTB, Lee supports projects for rail and transit agencies such as Bay Area Rapid Transit, California High-Speed Rail Authority, Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, and other agencies along the West Coast.

Prior to joining HNTB, Lee was president of North America at China Railway Signal & Communication Corporation Limited, a China-based global leader of train control technologies. He also worked for the U.S. Department of Transportation and General Electric Transportation. He has been involved in several worldwide deployments of signal and communication systems, including Communication Based Train Control, European Train Control Systems, Chinese Train Control Systems, computer interlocking, supervisory control and data acquisition, and Automatic Fare Collection. He is experienced with rolling stock technologies, including high-speed trains, bogies, traction motors, locomotives and hybrid transit buses.

Lee earned a Master’s in Business Administration, management of technology, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Sloan School of Management. He also received a master’s in mechanical engineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and a bachelor’s in automotive engineering from Tsinghua University in Beijing.
