Robert Turton Joins Bridge Practice at WSP

TEMPE, ARIZONA —  Robert Turton has joined WSP USA, a leading engineering and professional services consultancy, as vice president and complex bridge manager, for the firm’s West region.

            Turton, who is based in the firm’s Tempe, Arizona office, is responsible for supporting the pursuit and delivery of complex bridges, including long-span, movable, concrete segmental and bridge asset management services.  

            “Rob is a nationally recognized professional and specialist with over three decades of progressive experience in the transportation industry ranging from structural engineering, bridge design and construction, to project and program leadership,” said Barton Newton, U.S. complex bridge director at WSP USA. “His experience has been gained through engagements in small, medium and large firms on projects throughout the United States with construction costs ranging from the millions to the billions of dollars.”

            Turton is an accomplished designer with extensive experience in the planning, design and construction of transportation structures using state-of-the-art analysis, design and construction techniques. His responsibilities have included developing design concepts, directing design staff, quality control, and constructability review to providing construction-phase services on a range of facilities – highway, rail, pedestrian/bikeway and aviation. Projects include rural and urban facilities ranging from short- to long-span and low- to high-level including concept studies, new designs, value and risk analyses, widenings, condition assessments, retrofits, strengthenings, inspections and ratings, seismic and scour vulnerability evaluations, consulting and construction engineering. 

            Turton has authored technical papers, lectured at universities, and presented at local, national and international symposiums on diverse topics. In addition to having been associated work numerous award-winning projects, he has also been presented with an individual technical excellence award by the American Council of Engineering Companies and designated a distinguished alumnus of the University of Arizona’s Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics.

            Turton completed his graduate studies in civil engineering at the University of Arizona and his undergraduate studies in aerospace engineering at Boston University. He is a licensed civil and structural engineer in eleven states (AK, AZ, CA, CO, FL, HI, IL, NM, NV, OH, and UT).

            Away from work, Turton has volunteer managed and coached youth baseball in Tucson and Phoenix for more than three decades.
