Project Name: George Mason High School

Company Name: Gilbane Building Company, Stantec, and Quinn Evans Architects

Project Location: Falls Church, Virginia United States

Project Information/Details: The design-build team of Gilbane Building Company, Stantec, and Quinn Evans Architects celebrate the groundbreaking of the new $120 million George Mason High School in Falls Church, Virginia. The groundbreaking marks an important milestone in a process that began a decade ago with conversations in the Falls Church community around building the first new high school in over 50 years. “The groundbreaking for George Mason High School is an exciting milestone for the Falls Church community,” said Peter Noonan, Superintendent, Falls Church City Public Schools. “We are committed to building the creative and academic capacity in each of our students and this tremendous new learning environment will truly serve our community for decades to come.” The 28-acre site presented a unique challenge. With an occupied high school and middle school already on-site, as well as athletic fields, community resources, and 10 acres reserved for future development, the team focused on a vertical design to maximize the project footprint. Stantec designed a seven-story solution that unifies the site, integrates the campus with the nearby community, offers robust safety and security measures, and resolves significant traffic and parking issues. The new 300,000 square foot high school will provide a comprehensive, flexible, and future-ready learning environment for 1,200 students with growth capacity to 1,500 students. “The community shared their vision and we are fortunate to play a role in helping them realize this next chapter for George Mason High School,” said Derk Jeffrey, senior principal, Stantec. “The new campus will raise the bar academically, strengthen connections with the local community, and pave the way for the mixed-use development to come.” The project is a collaboration between Gilbane, Stantec, and Quinn Evans. Gilbane is the design builder, providing design oversight, preconstruction management, and construction implementation. Stantec is the architect of record, providing planning/programming, architectural design, interior design, FF&E, and construction administration. Quinn Evans is serving as an affiliated architect. “Over the last year our team has facilitated hundreds of meetings with stakeholders to understand the needs of the community and its’ students,” said Jennifer Macks, senior project executive, Gilbane Building Company. “We were able to leverage the design-build process to successfully capture end user needs and expedite project delivery with one goal in mind – delivering a school the community can be proud of for years to come.” The state-of-the-art building is designed to achieve LEED Gold Certification and is Net Zero Energy Ready. Construction of the high school is expected to be complete by December 2020, while sitework will continue until August 2021. Gilbane Building Company and Stantec are ranked as the nation’s #1 K-12 Builder and #1 K-12 Designer, respectively, by Building Design + Construction. Project Name: 25 Kent Avenue

Company Name: DeSimone Consulting Engineers

Project Location: Brooklyn, New York United States

Project Information/Details: DeSimone Consulting Engineers, a leading engineering firm with offices worldwide, served as structural engineer for Williamsburg, Brooklyn’s first ground-up commercial development in more than 40 years. Located at 25 Kent Avenue near the East River waterfront, the 500,000 square foot building is expected to debut this year and was completed in collaboration with design architect Hollwich Kushner and Gensler, the design development architect. The eight-story, bifurcated structure is comprised of two distinct rectangular volumes that are linked by a sloped, glass curtainwall which appears to hover above a central plaza. The volumes also incorporate a series of jagged setbacks and cantilevers at each edge to create outdoor terraces on every floor. Drawing upon the neighborhood’s rich industrial heritage, the building is sheathed in multi-tonal brick masonry, blackened steel, and glass materials. Within, building components include approximately 270,000 square feet of office space, 44,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and restaurants, a 31,000 square foot public plaza that bisects the entire structure, 57,000 square feet dedicated to light manufacturing, and 50,000 square feet of cellar-level parking. Future occupants will also have access to over 40,000 square feet of outdoor terraces and a manicured roof deck. Ceiling spans exceed 15 feet at office levels, and a soaring 18 to 22 feet on retail floors. “25 Kent represents great potential for the neighborhood to become a sophisticated commercial destination and we’re honored to have worked on such a remarkable development,” said Stephen DeSimone, President and CEO of DeSimone Consulting Engineers. “The build-site introduced numerous design challenges, but we resolved these quickly and efficiently to deliver a unique, multi-faceted property on the Williamsburg waterfront.” The development team includes Rubenstein Partners and Heritage Equity Partners, who launched leasing at the property in 2018. Today, the building is expected to achieve LEED Gold-certification. Project Name: SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Pediatric Specialty Services

Company Name: KAI

Project Location: St. Louis, Missouri United States

Project Information/Details: KAI, along with the community, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and Sansone Group, recently celebrated the opening of the first pediatric specialty healthcare center in North St. Louis County – SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Pediatric Specialty Services. Designed by KAI, the 15,000-square-foot medical building, owned by Sansone Group, is located at 3878 Pershall Road in Ferguson, MO. The new facility houses SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Pediatric Specialty Services and also an office of SSM Health Medical Group Pediatrics. Specialty services offered at the new center include gastroenterology, ENT (otolaryngology), orthopedics, pulmonology, neurology and endocrinology. “The most exciting thing about our North County site is the growth and the ability to reach out into the North County of St. Louis and to be present for all the children as far as their respective specialty and primary care needs,” said Matt Broom, MD, Chief Medical Officer & VP Medical Affairs, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. “This is something that has been a long mission of Cardinal Glennon and bringing specialty care closer to the families that we serve is a really big deal.” The building’s child-friendly design incorporates the use of natural lighting; a mix of vibrant colors on the walls and furniture; comforting natural materials like wood and stone; and whimsical, hand-painted artwork throughout. The single-story facility is broken down into two separate services—one half of the building is occupied by SSM Health and the other half is occupied by SSM Cardinal Glennon. Both tenants share a common reception area, waiting room and isolated sick waiting room. Each side has at least 12 exam rooms, and the facility features an audiology booth, procedure room, casting room, X-Ray room and space for a future ultrasound and mobile MRI. “SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Pediatric Specialty Services is a facility that will positively transform the lives of so many residents in North County in so many ways,” said KAI Enterprises President Darren L. James. “The center will give children and their families access to specialized care and general pediatrics right in their own community. KAI is honored to have been involved in such an important project.” Construction started in October 2018, with the KAI and HBD Construction team serving as the general contractor.
