WASHINGTON, DC  The Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance (SSSBA) and officials from Barron County, Wisconsin will host a complimentary short span steel bridge workshop and tour of a recently constructed innovative local county bridge on September 6, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Central Time. The workshop will be held at the Barron County Highway Facility on 260 North 7th Street in Barron, Wisconsin. The event sponsors are Barron County, Wisconsin; the Wisconsin County Highway Association (WCHA); and the SSSBA. Professional Development Hours (PDHs) will be provided by WCHA.

“With passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we have an unprecedented opportunity to rebuild America’s infrastructure,” said Dan Snyder, vice president, construction program for the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and director of the Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance. “This workshop and tour will equip participants with information they need to replace aging structures with cost-effective, time-saving steel options for state and county bridges.”

Snyder said, “The highlight of the bridge tour will be the 15th Avenue Bridge in Barron, which is the first steel press-brake-formed tub girder (PBFTG) bridge to be installed in Wisconsin. The innovative PBFTG technology is being used in 18 states nationwide.” He noted that Mark Servi, recently retired highway commissioner of the Barron County Highway Department with years of experience installing short span steel bridges, will be one of the presenters.

The topics for the workshop include:

  • “Short Span Steel Bridge Overview, Design Tools, Bridge Economy and Life Cycle Costs” – presented by Michael Barker, Ph.D., P.E., professor at the University of Wyoming and director of the SSSBA Bridge Education Center
  • “Prefabricated Steel Bridge Options and Accelerated Bridge Construction Solutions” – presented by Guy Nelson, Valmont Structures
  • “Barron County Press-Brake Formed Tub Girder Bridge” – presented by Mark Servi, Barron County; Jacob Friberg, Cooper Engineering; and Tim MacLaughlin-Barck, Larson Construction
