Former NDOT director serves as a strategic advisor in the West Region

Susan Martinovich, PE, joined HNTB Corporation as transportation practice consultant for the West Region and vice president. She is based in HNTB’s new Las Vegas office. Martinovich’s career in transportation spans more than 35 years, including serving six years as director for the Nevada Department of Transportation.

“Susan is well-known for her accomplishments and contributions within the transportation industry. As a former state DOT director and past president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, she brings a unique perspective to our firm,” said John Friel, executive vice president and leader of the firm’s Western U.S. practice. “She is a tremendous resource for our clients as we continue to deliver quality work and great value on their most complex and important infrastructure projects.”

In this role, Martinovich serves as a strategic advisor to HNTB project delivery teams throughout the Western U.S. As part of HNTB’s leadership team, she also provides mentoring and coaching for project, office and division leadership teams. She also supports HNTB’s national DOT and toll market teams in building and fostering relationships with clients across the country.

During her 28-year tenure at NDOT, Martinovich worked to form the department into a responsive and customer friendly agency through broader communications strategies, both within and externally, to improve transparency and show accountability to the Nevada governor, legislature and public. During her tenure as director, she was a proactive proponent of partnering with local agencies to address multimodal transportation solutions in the Las Vegas and Washoe County metropolitan areas. Immediately prior to joining HNTB, Martinovich served as national highway market director for another consulting firm.

Martinovich has received many honors over her career, including the American Road & Transportation Builders Association Guy Kelcey Leadership Award; ARTBA’s Ethel S. Birchland Lifetime Achievement Award; the AASHTO/ARTBA/AGC George S. Bartlett Award; and the White House Champion of Change.

She has held numerous leadership positions in professional associations, including secretary of the Women’s Transportation Seminar international board; ARTBA’s executive board, Women’s Council, and president of the planning and design division; president of AASHTO; and executive committee for the Transportation Research Board.

Martinovich earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of Nevada. She is registered as a professional engineer in Nevada and California.
