ROCKY HILL, Conn. – Bart Sweeney, PE, joined HNTB Corporation as senior project manager and associate vice president. Based in the firm’s Rocky Hill office, Sweeney has 25 years of transportation infrastructure experience that includes project management, design, construction, maintenance and operations.

“Bart is recognized throughout the state as a transportation leader with comprehensive knowledge of Connecticut’s bridges and highways,” said Jennifer Carrier, PE, HNTB Connecticut office leader and associate vice president. “His expertise with complex structural design components combined with his knowledge of infrastructure maintenance are greatly valued by transportation agencies who are challenged to sustainably maintain aging infrastructure with less funding in our current environment.”

Prior to joining HNTB, Sweeney’s background included 23 years with the Connecticut Department of Transportation where he most recently served as transportation maintenance director for the bureau of highway operations. In that role, his responsibilities included oversight for $140 million of service contracts, highway operations centers, and the agency’s $200 million equipment fleet. While at ConnDOT, he also managed maintenance activities for approximately 4,000 bridges throughout the state as well as serving as the transportation supervising engineer responsible for the design and construction of approximately 150 projects.

A graduate of the University of Connecticut with a bachelor’s in civil engineering and a master’s in structural engineering and transportation planning, Sweeney is an adjunct professor of civil engineering at the University of New Haven. He is a professional engineer in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island and a member of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, where he served on the subcommittee on maintenance and was vice chair of the pavement committee.

HNTB currently is designing and implementing major infrastructure projects for the Connecticut Department of Transportation, including program management of the I-84 Mixmaster program, the WALK railroad bridge replacement, construction engineering and inspection services for the Moses Wheeler Bridge replacement project, and engineering services for the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield rail corridor along with railroad construction engineering and inspection services.
