New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed Cathy Calhoun to become acting commissioner of the state Department of Transportation, as he nominated NYSDOT Commissioner Matthew Driscoll to become executive director of the Thruway Authority.

Calhoun has been the department’s chief of staff since July 1, 2015, and was formerly a deputy for intergovernmental affairs to state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.

She earlier was a central New York aide for former U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, Cuomo’s announcement said, and worked for former Gov. David Paterson in intergovernmental affairs.

Driscoll, who also became the department’s CEO in July 2015, will replace Bill Finch in leading the Thruway Authority. That agency maintains and operates 570 miles of toll roads.

While Driscoll’s appointment is subject to Senate confirmation, the Times Union newspaper reported that “it’s expected he will take over as acting director once the Thruway Authority board of directors confirms him.”

Cuomo said: “Matthew Driscoll and Cathy Calhoun are both dedicated public servants who exemplify what it means to serve the people of New York, and I am proud they will continue their service in these new leadership positions.”

The governor added that “The Thruway Authority and Department of Transportation are critical to improving infrastructure in every corner of this state, and as they transition to their new roles I look forward to working alongside these experienced leaders to ensure the safety and stability of New York infrastructure for generations to come.”
