Judges Pick ‘Top 12’ List of State DOT Projects to Compete for Best in America

A “Top 12” group of infrastructure projects that state departments of transportation completed last year are competing as finalists for two national prized in then 2017 “America’s Transportation Awards.”

That competition – sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the AAA motor club and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce – spotlights excellence in projects that improve safety and mobility for the traveling public and improve the flow of commerce.

The three projects that drew the highest scores by expert judges, from each of four regional award rounds this summer, make up the final dozen.

“We’re excited about the high level of participation in this year’s competition,” said AASHTO Executive Director Bud Wright. “Transportation departments in the District of Columbia and 38 states submitted a record 92 project nominations.”

He continued: “Not every nominee takes home a prize but the programs and projects being implemented and constructed across the country – such as roads, bridges, bike and pedestrian trails – are making communities safer, healthier and more prosperous. So the big winners are the American people.”

AASHTO said that for the first time in the 10-year history of this contest, online voting for the People’s Choice Award will be weighted to each state’s population, in order to provide greater competition between states with larger and smaller populations.

The two national winners will be announced at AASHTO’s annual meeting in Phoenix on Sept. 27.

More information about the dozen finalist projects, and information on how to vote online, are available at the contest website.
