This Week: Civil Engineers to Gather in Chicago for the ASCE 2023 Convention

CHICAGO, IL. â€” The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 2023 Convention takes place this week at the Hilton Chicago Hotel in Chicago, Illinois, October 18-21! As we approach the two-year anniversary celebrating passage of the bipartisan federal infrastructure law, civil engineers from across the country and around the globe will convene at ASCE’s flagship conference which also includes an exclusive preview of a new ASCE IMAX film Cities of the Future: Reimagining Our World at the opening reception at the Museum of Science and Industry. Topics to be explored through convention presentations include highlights of significant projects; technical tours of Chicago projects; natural and man-made disasters and how to mitigate their impacts; solutions to workforce challenges; and innovative solutions to tackle some of the biggest engineering challenges.

 

Event highlights include:

  • Wed., Oct 18, 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. – Welcome Reception at Museum of Science and Industry – Attendees will have access to a special screening of the IMAX film Cities of the Future: Reimagining Our World and hear from Academy Award-nominated director of Cities of the Future, Greg MacGillivray. The screening will be followed by a welcome  reception among the museum’s world-class exhibits.
  • Thu., Oct. 19, 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. — Opening Plenary Session: Preparing for the Next Wave of Innovation with Sheryl Connelly — Sheryl Connelly, futurist and global consumer trends expert, guides you through innovative practices and methods for disrupting industry trends now and in the future.
  • Thu., Oct. 19, 1:30 – 5:00 p.m. — Innovation Contest — Watch ASCE student chapter teams pitch industry leaders on innovative projects and practices in the 2023 ASCE Innovation Contest Finals. Meet the future leaders of civil engineering in the exhibit hall as they present their infrastructure solutions.  
  • Fri., Oct. 20, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. — The Future of Transportation: Connected Automated Vehicles — Join a discussion on the future of automated and connected vehicle technology, how they are being considered with infrastructure development, and how engineers are playing a role. Blaine Leonard, former ASCE president and Transportation Technology Engineer at the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will lead the discussion.
  • Fri., Oct. 20, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. — From Capitol Hill to Main Street: Navigating the Latest Infrastructure Policy Changes — With the bipartisan infrastructure law nearly two year old, how are water and transportation industries being impacted by the record levels of funding? Hear from industry leaders on how the law is changing infrastructure sectors and what other policies are on the horizon.
  • Fri., Oct. 20, 2:15 – 3:45 p.m. — Industry Leaders Forum: Infrastructure Resilience—Natural Disasters and Beyond — Hear how infrastructure leaders are addressing the most pressing challenges of the 21st century, from severe weather events like hurricanes, tornadoes and wildfires, to cyber security threats, supply chain disruptions and workforce shortages.
  • Fri., Oct 20, 6:30 – 10:00 p.m. – OPAL Awards Gala – The OPAL Awards Gala honors outstanding civil engineering leaders and projects The evening will culminate with revealing the Honor Award project that will take home the top prize of the night – the 2023 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award.
  • Sat., Oct. 21, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. — Closing Luncheon with Greg MacGillivray – Lights, Camera, Innovation: Exploring the intersection of artistry and technology — Hear from Greg MacGillivray, director of Cities of the Future and ASCE’s last feature film Dream Big: Engineering Our World. MacGillivray has worked on 40 giant-screen films in his career and is the first documentary filmmaker to reach the $1 billion benchmark in worldwide ticket sales.
