Ohio has adopted four of the 2021 International Codes, taking a significant step toward ensuring the safety, efficiency and resiliency of its communities

Columbus, OhioThe state of Ohio has adopted four of the 2021 International Codes® (I-Codes ®), including the 2021 editions of the International Building Code® (IBC), International Mechanical Code® (IMC), International Plumbing Code® (IPC) and International Existing Building Code® (IEBC). This decision comes after careful consideration by the Ohio Board of Building Standards and is a testament to the state’s commitment to upholding the highest standards in building construction and maintenance.

“Adopting these I-Codes® helps modernize Ohio’s building regulatory system, supports growth in manufacturing and improves the health and safety of Ohio cities,” said Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. “We applaud Ohio’s Board of Building Standards for prioritizing and leveraging building codes to protect public safety.”

This update is a direct result of Governor DeWine’s and Lt Governor Husted’s initiative to reform the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC) and aims to maintain the safety of current buildings and ensure the safety, affordabilityle, and sustainability of new ones.

Building codes establish the minimum requirements to ensure safe and resilient structures, and benefits of adoption include cost reduction and casualty prevention. By embracing the 2021 I-Codes®, Ohio sets a precedent for other states to evaluate current codes and practices and to adopt updated codes that promote safety, resilience and sustainability in the built environment.

Adoption of these codes will go into effect in Ohio on March 1, 2024. Read the 2024 Ohio Building, Mechanical and Plumbing Code Rules here.
