(DENVER) – Opflow, the monthly magazine for water utility operators published by the American Water Works Association (AWWA), earned an Award of Excellence in the Magazines, Journals & Tabloids category for its “Operators Need to Know” series by the 2023 APEX Awards for Publication Excellence. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Opflow has received this recognition and the fourth year in a row that it picked up an Award of Excellence for a series on a single topic/theme.

This is the 35th year for the annual APEX Awards program, presented by Communications Concepts, which recognizes excellence in graphic design, editorial content and the ability to achieve overall communications achievements.

The “Operators Need to Know” series encompasses a wide range of subjects within the water sector, including treatment, infrastructure, water quality and laboratory issues.

“The goal of the ‘Operators Need to Know’ series is to take complex subjects and break them down to basics,” said Hunter Adams, co-author of the series and environmental laboratory supervisor with Cypress Environmental Laboratory in Wichita Falls, Texas. “The articles are useful for new operators, as refreshers for seasoned operators, and for those working in small systems who might not have the internal support large systems have.”

This year’s award-winning entries for the series include articles from the March, April and May 2022 issues of Opflow. Most recently, the series continued in the July/August 2023 issue of Opflow and delves into the topic of organic contaminants, providing operators with essential knowledge in this area.

“The ‘Operators Need to Know’ series has been a popular addition to Opflow,” said John Hughes, editor of Opflow. “I’m happy we were able to provide such great content for AWWA’s members and continue our APEX winning streak!”
