HNTB served as program management consultant for the project, which was led by the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Office of Innovative Delivery and operated by the State Road and Tollway Authority.

ATLANTA HNTB Corporation was recognized by the International Bridge, Tunnel & Turnpike Association with a 2020 Toll Excellence Award for work as program management consultant on the Northwest Corridor Express Lanes in Georgia. HNTB was honored in the category of Private Sector Innovation at the recent IBTTA Annual Meeting & Exhibition.

The winning project was led by the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Office of Innovative Delivery and operated by the State Road and Tollway Authority. It is the largest single investment in Georgia’s transportation infrastructure and one of the most transformative projects in state history.

The Northwest Corridor Express Lanes are a fully reversible system spanning across two counties and two interstates and is a dual-agency endeavor. These express lanes not only improve traffic flow, they enhance transit opportunities, boost mobility, and spur economic development.

“We are truly honored to be recognized along with our client by IBTTA with this distinguished award. Our firm works collaboratively every day with our clients and partners to deliver infrastructure solutions like the Northwest Corridor Express Lanes that solve complex and challenging problems,” said Kevin Hoeflich, PE, HNTB Chairman Toll Services and senior vice president. “For all of us at the firm, and especially the team responsible for delivering this impressive project, IBTTA’s industry-wide recognition is high praise and a meaningful honor.”

The project extends along I-75 and I-575 in Cobb and Cherokee Counties, northwest of the city of Atlanta. This 29.7-mile reversible tolled system (traveling southbound toward Atlanta in the morning commute and northbound in the evening) included the design of four new Express Lane access interchanges on I-75, 14 slip ramp access points along I-75 and I-575, and 39 bridges.

The project was delivered through a public-private partnership and design-build-finance model that led to an on-time and on-budget delivery. The model was streamlined to include less private financing and greater control for the state.
