Transit and Rail Expert Cheryle Tyson Joins HNTB in Dallas

PLANO, TEXAS  – Cheryle Tyson joined HNTB Corporation as a national transit/rail consultant. She is based in the firm’s Plano office, focusing on advancing growth of HNTB’s profile in the transit industry while providing strategic advice to the firm’s transit team and clients nationwide.

“Cheryle is widely known throughout the industry as a proven leader, innovator, strategist and trusted advisor,” said Kimberly Slaughter, HNTB transit/rail practice leader and senior vice president. “Her knowledge and experience working with federal agencies is of great value to transit agencies and important to our team as we consult on policy issues and changes.” 

Tyson has more than 30 years of design, project and program management experience in the public sector. She has spent the previous 22 years with Federal Transit Administration Region 6 in Fort Worth, Texas, as regional engineer.

At FTA, her responsibilities included engineering review of grants, grant management, oversight of three Project Management Oversight Contractors and attendance at oversight reviews. She saw multiple complex projects from grant implementation to completion of construction, including Tulsa Downtown Transit Center, McAllen Intermodal Center, Waco Intermodal Center, Waco Admin and Maintenance Facility, Albuquerque Alvarado Intermodal Center, and Oklahoma City Downtown Transit Center.

Additionally, while at FTA, Tyson provided oversight for Capital Investment Grant projects, all of which were delivered on time or early, and within budget and scope. Her CIG projects included: Little Rock River Rail Streetcar; Dallas Area Rapid Transit Green Line; DART Orange Line Phase 2 and 3; Houston METRO North Corridor Light Rail Extension; Houston METRO Southeast Light Rail; Dallas Streetcar; Albuquerque Rapid Transit Project; and Uptown Dedicated Bus Lanes (Houston).

Tyson is a graduate of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

HNTB has involvement with many of the nation’s most high-profile transit programs, including the DART Blue Line Light Rail extension; Los Angeles Metro Sepulveda Pass Alternative Assessment; Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority’s Bay Area Rapid Transit Silicon Valley Phase II; Sound Transit’s West Seattle-Ballard Link Extension; Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Quality Assurance, Internal Compliance Oversight and Systems GPC; Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority GPC and Engineering On-call Contracts; Chicago Transit Authority’s Wilson Station; the Los Angeles Metro Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor; and the Charlotte Area Transit System’s LYNX Blue Line Light Rail Extension in North Carolina.
