Stantec has won a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Leadership Award from the Canadian network of the United Nations Global Compact, in the Large Organizations category. Presented by the Global Compact Network Canada, the SDG Awards recognize Canadian organizations that are advancing 17 sustainable and socially responsible goals to ensure a better future. These goals focus on issues deemed critical to achieving a sustainable future, such as ending extreme poverty, fighting inequality and injustice, and protecting our planet. The awards were handed out on September 6 in Toronto.

“We are honored that our work is being recognized by this award. It reflects Stantec’s commitment to addressing the multi-faceted nature of sustainable development in communities across the world,” says Rachel Bannon-Godfrey, Stantec’s Discipline Leader for Sustainability in its Buildings practice. “We are actively working on tracking the SDG’s metrics in our core operations and client services. The targets identified by the SDGs have potential for real change, and the building industry has a significant responsibility in achieving them.”

Stantec reported progress on all 17 of the United Nation’s Global Goals in its annual Sustainability Report. The most significant positive impacts were in the areas of: clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action. In winning this award, Stantec was recognized for leadership on projects in the developed and developing world related to sustainable building and infrastructure design, water conservation, access to sanitation, climate change adaptation/strategy development, and renewable energy financing.

“This award is a testament to our dedication to sustainable development,” says Christophe Leroy, Operations Director for Stantec in Belgium. “Next to this overall focus, the work we do in our international development group is almost entirely dedicated to the achievement of the SDGs and building stronger and more resilient communities. The SDGs are at the core of development projects we carry out globally for international funding institutions such as the World Bank, USAid, the European Commission, and different investment banks.”

Global Compact Network Canada is the Canadian network of the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.
