SAN FRANCISCO — The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced today that the new U.S. Courthouse in Los Angeles was recently named Project of the Year by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) at its National Conference and Trade Show in Washington, D.C.

CMAA officials recognized 17 projects for construction management excellence in a variety of categories including government, healthcare, environmental, education, transportation and commercial. The new U.S. Courthouse in Los Angeles topped the government category for projects valued at more than $50 million and was also named Project of the Year from among all Project Achievement Award recipients.

Jacobs served as the construction manager for the courthouse, located in downtown Los Angeles. The iconic building was a design-build collaboration between Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) and Clark Construction Group-California LP under GSA’s Design Excellence Program, which advocates for the incorporation of best architectural practices in federal projects. The courthouse project incorporated the design-build delivery model, where designer and constructor served as equal partners in an integrated fashion to deliver the project. The design-build model reduced the project duration from a typical six to seven years for a traditional construction project down to 43 months.

“Completing this unique $343 million project was a highly collaborative effort on a very compressed schedule,” said GSA’s Pacific Rim Acting Regional Administrator Dan Brown. “The combined team of GSA, Jacobs, Clark Construction, SOM, and our judiciary partners came together and delivered an outstanding, noteworthy facility.”

Opened to the public in October 2016, the 10-story, 633,000-square-foot building includes 24 courtrooms and 32 judicial chambers for use by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The new courthouse is also home to the U.S. Marshals Service, GSA, and provides trial preparation space for the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Federal Public Defender.

In addition to the CMAA award, the new U.S. Courthouse has been lauded by numerous industry councils including the Design-Build Institute of America, the American Institute of Architects and the European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
