Tappan Zee Bridge Stay Cable Installation
Crews have finished installing the stay cables on the westbound span of the new Tappan Zee Bridge, the first portion of the bridge set to open later this year. The last of the 96 stay cables, the long metal strands hung off the new bridge's main span towers to suspend the road deck over the deepest part of the Hudson River, was installed last week on the Rockland-bound span, leaving a small gap in the main span.

Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency on March 30 after fire officials extinguished a massive fire on I-85 in Atlanta that led to the collapse of a bridge on the crowded interstate. Construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge is halfway done. Work on the massive $4-billion project has reached the 50 percent mark two years after it started, Tom McGuinness, construction compliance engineer for the New York State Thruway Authority, said Wednesday during a media boat tour of the 3-mile site. The New NY Bridge’s iconic 419-foot main span towers will be constructed utilizing a unique type of self-climbing concrete “jump forms.”
