The Environmental Benefits of High Performance Turf Reinforcement Mats

Course Information

When selecting erosion control solutions, High Performance Turf Reinforcement Mats (HPTRMs) offer environmental benefits that other erosion control technologies—such as rock riprap and concrete—can’t offer. During design, it’s important to consider factors such as hydraulic performance, durability, economics and environmental impacts. Sustainability and resiliency are becoming more important in project design, with emphasis being placed on the environmental impact created by materials. Erosion control solutions should be designed to provide a low environmental impact to achieve long-term performance and overall project success.

This article presents the environmental benefits of using HPTRMs as an erosion control solution. The environmental considerations that will be discussed include the following:

• Water-quality improvement

• Wildlife impact

• Carbon footprint reduction

• Engineered plastics vs. single-use plastics

HPTRMs can help improve water quality, be used in environmentally sensitive areas and have a much lower environmental impact when compared to hard-armoring erosion control solutions.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this article, the reader should understand:

• How HPTRMs help improve water quality

• Considerations for wildlife impact

• How HPTRMs reduce the carbon footprint of a project

• Differences between engineered plastics and single-use plastics
