New Federal Highway initiative asks Americans to help improve America’s highway infrastructure

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Administrator Sean McMaster launched a nationwide initiative asking Americans to help USDOT address critical highway infrastructure needs on the Eisenhower Interstate System. FHWA’s “Reimagining America’s Interstates” initiative is collecting comments on new interstate facility suggestions, feedback on major upgrades needed on existing routes, and how the system can better meet the needs of the 21st-century traveling public.

FHWA also debuted its Freedom 250 highway sign in celebration of the Interstate’s 70th Anniversary. States are invited to display this sign as part of the Department’s broader Freedom 250 initiative—a national effort celebrating the history, principles, and enduring promise of liberty that defines our nation.

“The new 'Freedom 250' highway signs stand for more than just historical milestones; they celebrate the very principle of freedom of movement that defines our nation,” said U.S. Transportation Deputy Secretary Steven Bradbury. “As we look toward the future with our 'Reimagining America’s Interstates' initiative, we are proud to champion the Trump Administration’s goal to build a highway network that matches the greatness, ambition, and enduring spirit of the American people.”

“After having propelled America into prosperity for 70 years, it’s time to envision how our nation’s interstates can better serve a modern economy,” said FHWA Administrator Sean McMaster.  “Alongside our new 'Freedom 250' highway signs—which celebrate our freedom of movement—this nationwide call for public comment is the next step in addressing modern challenges of our Interstate Highway System.  We want the American people to help us build a system that conquers today’s challenges and secures tomorrow’s growth.”

Background

  • Freedom 250 Highway Signs and Bridge Flags: To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary alongside key highway and bridge milestones, the FHWA is providing communities the opportunity to install commemorative signs and flags along highways.

  • Reimagining America’s Interstates: The FHWA will publish the “Reimagining America’s Interstates” Request for Information (RFI)in the Federal Register. The RFI seeks public input to better understand how the system is currently functioning, where to construct new interstate facilities, what major upgrades are needed for existing routes, and how the system can better meet the needs of the 21st-century traveling public. The RFI features 21 targeted questions addressing critical emerging issues, including freight growth and the integration of new technologies.
