Massive storms took out the City of Wynne’s facility in 2023, prompting emergency federal funding to repair and future-proof critical infrastructure

VANCOUVER, BC (May 11, 2026) – Kryton International, a global leader in smart concrete waterproofing, durability and antimicrobial solutions, is pleased to announce the successful completion of concrete protection work for a newly rebuilt wastewater treatment plant in the City of Wynne, Ark.

Following the devastating EF-3 tornado that severely impacted city infrastructure in 2023, Wynne was awarded $2.6 million in federal funding from the Delta Regional Authority (DRA) and the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) to restore and modernize its wastewater facilities. To ensure the long-term structural integrity and chemical resistance of the new plant, project specifiers utilized Kryton’s KIM BioGard®, an integral crystalline waterproofing admixture designed specifically for the harsh environments of sewage and wastewater systems.

“We recognized that there was urgency behind the Wynne wastewater treatment plant project, and we wanted to get it right. We knew that the residents of Wynne needed a wastewater treatment facility that had a long service-life, and could withstand the effects of highly acidic water, sulfates, salts and other harsh chemicals,” said Dan Moore of Sustain Admixtures, the concrete admixture supplier to the project. “We recommended KIM BioGard as their best option.”

“Wastewater infrastructure is constantly under attack from microbial-induced corrosion (MIC),” said Kari Yuers, President and CEO of Kryton. “By incorporating KIM BioGard® into the concrete at Wynne, the city is rebuilding while looking to the future and protecting its investment against the sulfuric acid and bacteria that typically degrade untreated concrete over time.”

The Cost of Corrosion Study, published by the Association for Materials Protection & Performance (AMPP), showed that the total annual estimated direct cost of corrosion in the U.S. water and wastewater sector was approximately $58.5 billion.

KIM BioGard® is an integral crystalline admixture used for waterproofing concrete. It utilizes Kryton’s proven Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) technology to seal cracks and protect against the penetration of water, sulfates, H2S, and acidic waters, extending the service life of concrete structures and eliminating costly maintenance.

The use of KIM BioGard® at the Wynne facility will significantly reduce future maintenance costs and extend the service life of the plant, ensuring the community has a resilient and sustainable wastewater system for decades to come. In the two-plus years that the facility was down, officials had to direct wastewater into a temporary lagoon.

These rebuilding efforts are critical for the Central and Eastern Arkansas region, which was impacted by a series of tornados on March 31, 2023.
