Project Name: Battery Coastal Resilience Project

Company Name: Stantec

Project Location: New York City, New York, United States

Project Information/Details: Top 10 global design firm Stantec has been selected by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to lead design for the Battery Coastal Resilience Project, spanning one third of a mile of waterfront along the 25-acre Battery Park. The project is one of several underway or in planning as part of the City’s Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency initiative focused on protecting Lower Manhattan from the impacts of rising sea levels caused by climate change. As part of the 4-year, $129 million (total) project, Stantec will lead design plans for a reconstructed wharf at the southern tip of Manhattan that will raise the waterfront esplanade approximately 5 feet above its current elevation – 11 feet above Mean Sea Level – to protect the park and nearby community, as the Battery currently sits at an elevation that will be submerged as sea levels rise. The project will ensure usability of this iconic public space for millions of yearly visitors over the next 80 years and play a critical role in Lower Manhattan’s growing network of resiliency reinforcements. “Current sea level rise projections show that the Battery sits in a particularly vulnerable location and needed wharf reconstruction provides a timely opportunity to protect the Battery’s unique character and usability for years to come,” said Brian O’Donnell, Principal-in-Charge, Stantec. Several complex issues will be addressed in the design, including in-water construction, interior drainage, and integration of a new wharf elevation with the existing parkland. The project team anticipates using an adaptive design strategy – one that will continue to provide the well-known views of the New York harbor, relief from sea level rise and nuisance flooding, and flexibility for uncertain future conditions. Resilient planting will also be critical in ensuring survivability from major storms while establishing a lush and peaceful setting. “Increases in extreme weather events are bringing resiliency to the top of city agendas across the world,” said Gary Sorge, Stantec’s Discipline Leader for Landscape Architecture. “Stantec is in a strong position to meet those needs and has been bringing forward both green and grey infrastructure solutions that will protect the drivers of our economies – our cities. It takes a truly interdisciplinary approach to make communities both resilient and livable for future generations.” The interdisciplinary design will be led out of Stantec’s New York City office, which counts more than 300 professionals, and will include landscape architecture, waterfront engineering, and environmental review, with the support of several specialty contractors. Design is expected to take 18 months. Stantec is involved in a number of resiliency projects in New York City, including the Raise Shorelines Citywide project, which involves shoreline reconstruction to protect against rising sea levels, and Newtown Barge Park, which recently opened in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and involved a waterfront reconstruction strategy similar to the approach for the Battery. The firm’s work on Box Street Park, which is currently in design, will convert a Metropolitan Transportation Authority Facility to a waterfront park to boost coastal resiliency and provide needed neighborhood park space. This work is synergistic with the company’s focus on Coastal Resilience, as outlined in its strategic plan and further reflected through work underway nationally, such as the Blue Green Corridors Project in New Orleans to reduce flood risk and encourage neighborhood revitalization.

Project Name: Kansas City Campus for Animal Care Facility

Company Name: Western Specialty Contractors – Kansas City Roofing and Sheet Metal Branch

Project Location: Kansas City, Missouri, United States

Project Information/Details: The Western Specialty Contractors – Kansas City Roofing and Sheet Metal Branch recently completed installation of metal roofing and siding on the new $26 million Kansas City Campus for Animal Care facility – home to KC Pet Project, one of the Top 5 no-kill, open admission animal shelters in the U.S. Located at the corner of Elmwood and Gregory streets in Swope Park, the 54,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art animal campus opened to the public on Jan. 1, 2020 and includes a full-service veterinary clinic, education pavilion, retail pet supplies store, café, patios and walking paths and will be the future home of KCMO Animal Health & Public Safety. The new facility, which is 40,000-square-feet bigger than the KC Pet Project’s previous space, is expected to provide services to more than 10,000 animals and 25,000 families per year throughout the Kansas City area. A groundbreaking for the new facility was held in June 2018, with Western’s team beginning its work on the project a year later. A crew of 10 roofers and eight sheet metal workers installed 50,000 square feet of TPO roofing, 13,000 square feet of standing seam metal, 7,000 square feet of longboard wood grain siding, 6,000 square feet of vertical firestone panels and 9,000 square feet of horizontal firestone panels. The total cost of the sheet metal and installation was $850,000. “This project was unique due to the large amount of wood grain and firestone panels that were used in combination for the building’s total exterior design,” said Rod O’Bannon, Branch Manager of Western’s Sheet Metal Division in Kansas City. “These particular materials were also selected based on their durability, cost effectiveness and modern aesthetic. We were proud to have been a part of this monumental project for the benefit of the animals and their families in the area.” Western Specialty Contractors completed its work on the building in five months and within budget. The general contractor on the project was Grand Construction of Kansas City, Kansas. Roshann Parris, Board Chair of the Kansas City Campus for Animal Care Board of Directors, praised the construction team for its “contribution to this game-changing, lifesaving facility.” “The Grand Construction team has repeatedly praised the work of all of the subcontractors and suppliers on this important project for their hard work, great attitude and professionalism,” said Parris. “The stunningly beautiful building, inside and out, is a testament to your impressive company and talented labor force who worked long hours, often in challenging weather conditions to keep the project on schedule.” For more information about Western’s roofing and sheet metal services, contact the Western Specialty Contractors branch office nearest you – https://www.westernspecialtycontractors.com/western-locations/.

Project Name: National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Headquarters

Company Name: Paul McKee, Jr.

Project Location: North St. Louis City, Missouri United States

Project Information/Details: St. Louis Developer Paul McKee, Jr. and his real estate development company M Property Services (MPS) took a huge step last week toward fulfilling a vision to turn St. Louis into a worldwide geospatial intelligence hub with construction starting on a $1.75 billion National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency headquarters in the heart of NorthSide Regeneration – a 1,500-acre mixed-use development led by McKee to revitalize blighted North St. Louis City. Approximately 400 guests, including state and local politicians, military leaders, residents, NGA employees, business representatives and federal intelligence officials, attended a Nov. 26 groundbreaking ceremony on a 97-acre site at Cass and Jefferson avenues where the new NGA headquarters will be built. St. Louis-based McCarthy Building Companies and Falls Church, Virginia-based HITT Contracting were selected as the design-build team leading the facility’s construction. McKee was instrumental in bringing the new NGA headquarters to North St. Louis when MPS and Bob Clark of Clayco Realty Group responded in 2012 to a blind request for proposals, that later turned out to be NGA. McKee had assembled the majority of the land needed for the facility within his proposed NorthSide Regeneration Innovation District, then worked with city officials to assemble the remaining property to accommodate the agency’s site requirements. McKee and Clark credit Senator Roy Blunt (R, Missouri) and Congressman Lacy Clay (D, St. Louis) for advancing the NGA site selection and funding process over the past five years, as well as the State of Missouri which provided the economic incentives to deliver the site. “With the incredible anchor of NGA’s $1.75 billion project now in the construction phase, the Innovation District within NorthSide Regeneration has begun,” said McKee. “Now we welcome the entire Geospatial/Geo-Intelligence industry leaders to come join NGA in this robust community.” The NGA project, the largest North St. Louis has seen in generations, will employ more than 3,000 people and is expected to boost the economy of the underserved area, which is located less than a mile from Downtown St. Louis, The Gateway Arch and Busch Stadium. Since learning of NGA’s plans to build in North St. Louis, geospatial intelligence firms MAXAR Technologies of Colorado and T-Kartor of Sweden have opened offices in The Globe Building in Downtown St. Louis. McKee also has plans for a GEOINT Village and Healthworks Village in the Innovation District to attract more geospatial intelligence firms to St. Louis. The new 712,000-square-foot NGA facility will replace the agency’s current facility in South St. Louis, which dates back to the 1840s. NGA is the world leader in timely, relevant, accurate and actionable geospatial intelligence that enables the U.S. intelligence community and the Department of Defense to fulfill the President’s national security priorities to protect the nation. The decision to build a new facility came after a series of planning studies showed it would be less costly, quicker and less disruptive to NGA’s mission to build a new facility rather than upgrade NGA’s current facilities. It has not yet been decided what will happen to NGA’s current campus, which is owned by the U.S. Air Force, when NGA vacates. The new facility will include office space, parking garages, a visitor’s center, an inspection facility and control access points. The facility, which is designed to achieve a LEED Silver certification for environmental sustainability, is expected to be completed and fully operational by 2025. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is managing the construction on behalf of NGA. “The new campus will be a secure, flexible, cutting-edge intelligence facility that will put NGA in the heart of St. Louis’ growing geospatial ecosystem and help NGA take advantage of its biggest strengths, its people and partners,” said NGA director Vice Admiral Robert Sharp. “NGA has been proud to call St. Louis home for the past 70 years. I’m excited to see what NGA’s people and partners in the St. Louis region can accomplish together for the next 70.” McKee has plans to develop the remaining acres around NGA that includes a total of three million square feet of office, two million square feet of retail, one million square feet for tech, 3,000 market-rate residential units and a primary care hospital. A new ZOOM C-store/gas station and GreenLeaf Market have already been completed within the development. An attendee at the groundbreaking Brian Krueger, head of the St. Louis Place Community Association where NGA will be located, said McKee deserves a lot of credit for assembling the land and bringing the new facility to his neighborhood, and he is grateful to see the progress. St. Louis Place is bounded by Palm Street on the north, Cass Avenue on the south, North Florissant on the east and North Jefferson on the west. “My wife and I have been in St. Louis Place for about 17 years and we have always been hopeful that someone would take an interest in the neighborhood. We attended many of Paul’s neighborhood meetings and heard his vision. As head of the St. Louis Place Community Association, Paul has always made himself available to come in and work with us,” said Krueger. “NGA would not be here without the assemblage of land that Paul put together. Plus, it was Paul who found and responded to the initial RFP that started the process in the first place.” About M Property Services M Property Services, LLC (MPS) is a full-service real estate development, property management and brokerage firm based in O’Fallon, MO.
