DETROIT – The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) has promoted Willian M. Wolfson to the newly established role of Deputy Chief Executive Officer. Wolfson previously served as GLWA’s Chief Administrative and Compliance Officer and as General Counsel.

“Bill is an exceptional leader and committed public servant, and this is a well-deserved promotion that highlights his remarkable skill in helping to guide our organization across a broad range of areas from legal matters to operations to emergency management and legislative outreach,” said Suzanne R. Coffey, P.E., Chief Executive Officer, GLWA. “His expertise has been invaluable to us and our mission to ensure that southeast Michigan residents have access to clean, safe water. I look forward to continuing to work with him in this new role.”

Wolfson has more than 40 years’ experience providing public sector legal and management consulting services. He joined the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) as its first general counsel in 2012 and played a pivotal role in the founding of GLWA during the city of Detroit’s bankruptcy. Prior to joining DWSD, Wolfson completed stints as partner at his own private law practice and Interim Corporation Counsel and Assistant Deputy CEO for Wayne County.

Wolfson earned his bachelor’s degree in political science and government from the University of Michigan and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Minnesota Law School. He was recently recognized as the 2024 Frank J. Kelley Distinguished Public Service Award honoree by the State Bar of Michigan. Each year, the Frank J. Kelley Distinguished Public Service Award is given to a state bar member who has strengthened the American justice system, demonstrated high standards of integrity, and made a significant impact on the State of Michigan.
