Applied Bolting Technology

Applied Bolting Technology produces DuraSquirt DTIs (Direct Tension Indicators) that supply a bright orange indication when bolts have been tensioned, making tight bolts easy to see. DTIs are load cells that ensure compliance with bolting standards and specs. Torque, Turn-of-Nut and TCs can all produce false-positive tension, and regularly do: Torque scatter is ±40% for new bolts and worse for weathered. Relying on torque is optimism at best. TCs are torque bolts that are adversely affected by cold or wet weather. Turn-of-Nut can be defeated by misrepresenting turn angle, regardless of turn applied. DTIs read load. If a bolt is tight, a DTI will show it, independent of weather, torque, angle, tool or skill.

DuraFuse Frames

For your next project, get the “DuraFuse Frames Difference” for steel moment frames. Reduce total steel tonnage, simplify fabrication and rapidly erect the frame while improving resilience. Ensure your building is ready for the next earthquake and reoccupation afterwards. DuraFuse Frames are the most resilient and economical prequalified steel moment frame system.

Earthquake damage is confined to a replaceable fuse without beam or column damage, minimizing post-event repair cost and duration. Full-scale laboratory and shake-table tests demonstrate performance exceeding the standards. Our engineers collaborate with your design team to develop resilient design options for new construction or retrofit projects. For wind-controlled designs, our team can support you in designing the most economical frame considering steel tonnage, fabrication and erection.

American Institute of Steel Construction

Structural steel designers have a valuable resource for the design of end-plate moment connections in AISC Steel Design Guide 39, End-Plate Moment Connections, which is available at aisc.org/dg.

The guide, written by Virginia Tech’s Matthew Eatherton, S.E., PhD, and Thomas Murray, P.E., PhD, reviews how to use yield-line analysis to determine end-plate strength, details design procedures for determining required bolt strength, and provides 15 end-plate moment connection configurations.

The design guide also includes 30 design examples for gravity, wind and low-seismic-ductility design; three examples for high-seismic-ductility design; and a comprehensive literature review.

Design Guide 39 is available for download at aisc.org/dg. Like all digital design guides, it is free for AISC members; printed versions also are available for purchase.

Steel Deck Institute

Steel Deck Institute (SDI) provides uniform industry standards for the engineering, design, manufacturing, and field usage of steel floor and steel roof decks. Members of the SDI are manufacturers of steel roof and floor deck. The products they manufacture are primarily used to support overlying roofing materials or serve as a permanent form and/or positive reinforcement for concrete floor slabs.

There are many advantages to using steel deck in roof and floor construction, including physical properties such as structural strength, all-weather constructability and fire resistance. Uniform quality, proven durability and economic value are other attributes of steel roof and floor deck. More recently, building designers recognized the advantages of steel deck for its appearance, acoustical properties and sustainability. The mission of the SDI is to promote these advantages and provide guidance in the proper usage of steel roof and floor deck.

In September 2023, the SDI launched a new website to promote available resources. Our goal was to create a comprehensive space for visitors to easily find SDI resources they need, including Codes and Standards, Steel Deck Research, Construction Manuals, Design Manuals, Technical Notes, News and Blogs, Webinars, and more. Visit our new website and discover more.

Steel Joist Institute

The Steel Joist Institute (SJI), a nonprofit organization of active joist manufacturers, was founded in 1928 to address the lack of uniform joist standards within the industry. Today, SJI continues to maintain the standards for steel joist construction as an ANSI-approved Standards Developing Organization. In addition, SJI provides resources, including publications, live and recorded webinars, and design tools to assist structural engineers or other AEC professionals with utilization of steel joists and joist girders. The Roof and Floor Bay Analysis Tools provide efficient and economical joist and joist girder options—including cost data—for most projects. Additionally, they include a vibration check (floor) and a ponding analysis (roof). We also offer tools such as the Joist and Joist Girder Reinforcement Tool, and we assist in identifying existing joists in buildings undergoing retrofit. Steel Tube Institute

The Steel Tube Institute (STI) is the leading technical resource in North America for steel tube products. They provide technical and design information for the steel industry, including HSS Design Manuals, connection design tools, live and recorded webinars, technical articles, and other valuable resources for industry professionals.

Many of these resources are free, and others are accessible via Professional Membership. The HSS Capability Tool identifies which shapes are available in the market, and who they are produced by. Connection design aids include Limit State Tables, spreadsheet design tools and HSS Connex, which is software that helps check HSS wall thicknesses based on the limit states.

For those looking to join our community, STI Individual or Group Professional Membership is available, providing access to live webinars, discounts on manuals, exclusive access to spreadsheet tools and more.
