Applied Bolting Technology

Applied Bolting Technology produces DuraSquirt DTIs (Direct Tension Indicators) that supply a bright orange indication when bolts have been tensioned, making tight bolts easy to see. DTIs are load cells that ensure compliance with bolting standards and specs. Torque, Turn-of-Nut and TCs can all produce false-positive tension, and regularly do: Torque scatter is ±40% for new bolts, and worse for weathered. Relying on torque is optimism, at best. TCs are torque bolts that are adversely affected by cold or wet weather. Turn-of-Nut can be defeated by misrepresenting turn angle, regardless of turn applied. DTIs read load. If a bolt is tight, a DTI will show it, independent of weather, torque, angle, tool or skill.

American Institute of Steel Construction

The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) just released the latest version of its flagship standard, the “Specification for Structural Steel Buildings (ANSI/AISC 360-22),” the foundation of the 16th edition Steel Construction Manual, which AISC expects to publish later in 2023.

The updated Specification contains notable member and connection design updates, including new requirements for torsional buckling of members with lateral bracing offset from the shear center.

It also contains significantly expanded sections on composite design and design for fire conditions as well as a new appendix on high-strength filled composite members, all of which introduce provisions for the design of concrete-filled composite steel plate shear walls, also known as SpeedCore.

Learn more about the changes and download the new Specification at aisc.org/2022spec.

National Steel Bridge Alliance

The National Steel Bridge Alliance’s new, free Uncoated Weathering Steel (UWS) Guide offers everything you need to take advantage of a proven, economical corrosion-protection system.

For more than 50 years, bridge owners have relied on UWS to deliver excellent performance in diverse environments, and its benefits go way beyond aesthetics. UWS has inherent corrosion protection and doesn’t require any coating applications, so the steel is ready for erection much faster than coated members. This shaves time off the construction schedule.

No coating applications means there’s no paint to touch up or reapply–and less maintenance means less expense and fewer traffic disruptions.

Steel Deck Institute

Since its founding in 1939, the Steel Deck Institute (SDI) has provided uniform industry standards for the engineering, design, manufacture, and field usage of steel floor and roof decks. Members of the SDI are manufacturers of steel roof and floor decks. The products they manufacture are primarily used to support overlying roofing materials or serve as a permanent form and/or positive reinforcement for concrete floor slabs.

There are many advantages to using steel deck in roof and floor construction. These include physical properties such as structural strength, all-weather constructability and fire resistance. Uniform quality, proven durability and economic value have also long been known to be attributes of steel roof and floor deck. More recently, building designers have recognized the advantages of steel deck for its appearance, acoustical properties and sustainability. The mission of the SDI is to promote these advantages and provide guidance in the proper usage of steel roof and floor deck.

Steel Joist Institute

The Steel Joist Institute (SJI), a nonprofit organization of active joist manufacturers, was founded in 1928 to address the lack of uniform joist standards within the industry. Today, SJI continues to maintain the standards for steel joist construction as an ANSI-approved Standards Developing Organization. In addition, SJI provides resources, including publications, live and recorded webinars, and design tools to assist structural engineers or other AEC professionals with utilization of steel joists and Joist Girders. The Roof and Floor Bay Analysis Tools provide efficient and economical joist and Joist Girder options—including cost data—for most projects. Additionally, they include a vibration check (floor) and a ponding analysis (roof). We also offer tools such as the Joist and Joist Girder Reinforcement Tool, and we assist in identifying existing joists in buildings undergoing retrofit. SJI products are included in RISA, RAM, SCIA, Dlubal and SkyCiv software packages.

Steel Tube Institute

The Steel Tube Institute (STI) is the leading technical resource in North America for steel tube products. They provide technical and design information for the steel industry, including HSS Design Manuals, connection design tools, live and recorded webinars, technical articles, and other valuable resources for industry professionals.

Many of these resources are free, and others are accessible via Professional Membership. The HSS Capability Tool identifies which shapes are available in the market, and who they are produced by. Connection design aids include Limit State Tables, spreadsheet design tools and HSS Connex, which is software that helps check HSS wall thicknesses based on the limit states.

For those looking to join our community, STI Individual or Group Professional Membership is available, providing access to live webinars, discounts on manuals, exclusive access to spreadsheet tools and more.
