CALVERTON, Md., USAAtkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, has welcomed Maria Honeycutt, PhD, CFM as the new National Director for All-Hazards Resilience. Based in Calverton, Maryland, she will lead Atkins’ all-hazard resilience strategy for clients in the United States.

“Bringing top talent to our resilience business affirms our commitment to providing unrivalled expertise to our clients and their projects,” said Paul Demit, Atkins Community and Intermodal Infrastructure Business Unit Director. “Dr. Honeycutt’s expertise ensures we remain an industry leader in helping clients identify the full array of threats and hazards their communities face, particularly those posed by climate change, and take actions that reduce their risk and increase their resilience and well-being over the long term.”

A thought leader and experienced strategist in resilience policy and practice, Dr. Honeycutt will support clients in articulating a community vision that incorporates resilience to potential shocks and stresses, and in identifying ways to maximize the resilience benefits of their investments across critical infrastructure, cybersecurity, health, housing, economic development and environment. “Building resilience is more than just hardening physical infrastructure,” said Dr. Honeycutt. “It’s also about understanding the wider range of societal dimensions of resilience—safety, health, economy, social cohesion and equity—and devising solutions that reflect the critical connections among them. I am thrilled to join the Atkins team and help our clients take full advantage of the generational investments that are underway.”

Dr. Honeycutt is a nationally recognized subject matter expert and trusted executive advisor on climate and weather hazards, floodplain management and multi-hazard risk reduction. She joins Atkins after 14 years with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the last three detailed as the all-hazards resilience lead at the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Spanning two presidential administrations, she co-chaired the National Science and Technology Council’s Subcommittee on Resilience Science and Technology, leading 14 federal departments and agencies in coordinating and prioritizing investments in research and innovation to address man-made threats and natural hazards. Dr. Honeycutt also served as OSTP’s principal on flood and climate resilience, working with the White House and the federal interagency to assess and update the actionable science underpinning the Federal Flood Risk Management Standard and leading the development of decision-support tools for federal, state, local, tribal and territorial governments. Prior to joining NOAA, Dr. Honeycutt served as a science fellow in the U.S. Senate after spending seven years as an engineering consultant leading post-hurricane coastal flood recovery projects along the Gulf Coast. She earned her B.A. in geology from Smith College, M.S. and Ph.D. in oceanography from the University of Delaware and is professionally registered as a Certified Floodplain Manager.
