AASHTO Issues Salary Survey, HR Metrics Reports
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials recently issued two new publications: a survey of transportation industry salaries, along with a first-ever state department of transportation-focused human resource metrics report.

The annual AASHTO Salary Survey provides job classifications and salary information on positions currently used by the transportation industry.
The 2021 AASHTO Salary Survey contains 89 matched titles, divided into five broad job categories: Administrative; Transportation Engineers; General; Maintenance; and Other.
Each title includes a brief description, number of incumbents, salary range, benefits, and actual salary. The survey comes in two formats: a PDF download publication, which includes the full data of the report, and an Excel spreadsheet, which allows users to sort the data and perform specialized data analysis.

Meanwhile, the first annual AASHTO State DOT HR Metrics Report provides key human resource metrics from state DOTs that responded to a survey jointly developed by the AASHTO Committee on Human Resources and the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.
In that survey, state DOTs provided a wide range of data, including position counts, average age of new hires and current employees, average length of service, turnover rates and type of turnover, and retirement eligibility/projections.
The survey also tallied the percentage of state DOT staff teleworking full-time, part-time, or outside of the state and gathered diversity data as well, including gender, race, and ethnicity data for the entire agency and broken down by Equal Employment Opportunity or EEO position categories.
AASHTO said the collection and reporting of this data should help create a uniform set of metrics to guide nationwide policies, processes, and best practices. It will also help members establish “equity metrics” within their departments, aiding in state DOT efforts to become more representative of the communities they serve.
