Miyamoto International is delighted to welcome Dr. José Garcia Villamil to the Miyamoto team. Dr. García is a specialist in earthquake-resilient design and has joined Miyamoto International’s growing Puerto Rico office.

Providing Damage Assessment and Mitigation Engineering Expertise Across Puerto Rico

On January 7, 2020, Puerto Rico was hit by one of the strongest seismic events it has experienced in over a century. Categorized as a magnitude 6.4, it displaced over 8,000 Puerto Ricans and damaged more than 800 homes and businesses. Dr. García was one of the first structural engineers that came forward to assess and repair damaged structures after the 2020 earthquake. This was not his first time answering the call to action, as Dr. García had also provided his expertise in the days and months following the destruction of Hurricane Maria. He was able to reach many of the affected to provide damage assessments and mitigation engineering.

Dr. García joined Miyamoto International as principal with Iván Hernández as co-leader. Miyamoto arrived at Puerto Rico soon after the January 7th earthquake in response to the many damages and losses to provide support and assessments for citizens and the government. Having established a permanent office in Ponce, the firm serves private and public sector clients islandwide. With Miyamoto’s global resources and decades of experience, José, Iván, and the Miyamoto Puerto Rico team seek to safeguard lives and enhance economies.
