  • Yunex Traffic today announced the release of its RSU2X, the only CAV roadside unit (RSU) available in the U.S. tested to communicate with automakers’ 2023 model vehicle On Board Units (OBUs).
  • The RSU2X uses either DSRC or C-V2X signals to transmit speed limits, red light notices and wrong-way warnings, and captures the car’s speed, direction, and location for use by connected safety systems.
  • The powerful edge-computing unit can handle high traffic volumes, capable of handling 4,000 message verifications and 130 message signature operations per second.

AUSTIN, Texas – Yunex Traffic, a Siemens Mobility company and a global leader in intelligent traffic systems, today announced the release of its RSU2X, the only connected and autonomous vehicle roadside unit (RSU) available in the United States tested to “talk” to On Board Units (OBUs) in automakers’ soon to be released 2023 model vehicles.

The RSU2X has been in development for several years and is a central component of the ongoing Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority’s (THEA) CV Pilot program. The RSU2X has also been road tested for compatibility with multiple car manufacturers, and proven to send and receive critical safety messages when they roll off dealer lots in the fall.

The RSU2X features bidirectional communication (using either DSRC or C-V2X signals) enabling both the real-time transmission of crucial information to OBUs such as speed limits, red light notices and wrong-way warnings, as well as the capturing of the car’s speed, direction, and location for use by other connected safety systems.

It also features significantly more powerful edge-computing performance for high traffic volumes, capable of handling 4,000 message verifications and 130 message signature operations per second. The unit also comes with an enclosure capable of withstanding the high winds, extreme temperatures and natural phenomena of every U.S. region.

The RSU2X has been developed with high levels of built-in security measures in line with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework with regular threat and risk analyses and hardening measures. These include secure passwords, secure boot, as well as the use of encrypted and authenticated TLS interfaces to protect an agency’s infrastructure.

Yunex Traffic’s U.S. Connected Vehicle Product Manager Iouri Nemirovski says the RSU2X is a major leap forward in connected vehicle technology. “The ability to manage lots of vehicles with lots of security is what separates us,” he said. “The RSU2X has four times the computing power of our previous model and in one major test, managed 3 billion messages from 1,000 vehicles. These can accurately and safely handle the volume of messages needed for any city’s connected vehicle future.”

Yunex Traffic is the largest deployer of roadside units in the world, and because the company’s RSUs have been part of multiple successful connected vehicle pilots and testing with major automakers and their security certificates, the RSU2X will be completely compatible with the on-board units (OBUs) car companies plan to install as early as 2023. “For any agency, the guarantee of having roadside equipment compatible with the connected vehicles on their streets has to be paramount. Our RSU2X takes the worry out of the buying decision,” Nemirovski said.

The RSU2X offers a broad range of safety capabilities warning drivers about red traffic signals, potential rear end collisions, pedestrians in the road, wrong way ramps and end of ramps. With predictive capability, it can make drivers aware of many situations well before they occur. The unit is a direct follow on to Yunex Traffic’s widely deployed RSU1, which is over-the-air upgradable to run the latest software,

“We believe we add long-term value for the customer, because we can upgrade existing products in the field through updates, using the most user-friendly browser based user interface in the industry,” said Nemirovski. “Between the THEA pilot, the automakers’ OBU plans this fall and the release of the RSU2X, we believe this is a defining moment in the future of fully connected vehicles in America.”
