Fewer than one percent of the cars currently registered in the U.S. are electric, but the number is expected to grow by orders of magnitude by 2030. Full-scale adoption will require a vigorous and exhaustive network of charging stations. To get a big-picture sense of the current state of this network, we imagined a series of cross-country drives on the nation’s interstate highway system. We found that with the right amount of planning, it’s possible to traverse the country without spending a dime on gas, though in certain states drivers will encounter significant gaps.
