1. Eligibility: The blogging contest is open to those 18 years of age or older.
2. Contest Period: Contest entry period begins November 29, 2013 at 12 Midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST) and submissions must be entered by January 3, 2014 at 12 Midnight EST.
3. Assignment: Write a 500-600 word story addressing the following question:
“How can cities contribute to the advancement of sustainable development and address issues including water, energy and waste?”
Guidelines to writing the winning post: This year’s blogging contest explores the important contributions cities can make toward sustainable development. According to the World Bank, half of the world’s population lives in urban centers today and by 2050, that ratio will increase to 67 percent in cities–so cities must become “smart” and adapt to rapid urbanization as well as the increased stress on resources such as energy, water and waste.
To that end, issues worth exploring include the role of technology and innovation; energy and water efficiency; the advancement of new building materials; opportunities for entrepreneurship and social innovation; and how the transformation into a “smart city” will be conducive to both sustainability and economic opportunity. But be creative, these are only a few suggested topics.
The winning entry will clearly map out the connection between smart cities and sustainable development, and include recommended actions for how cities can play a vital role in accommodating far more people, while using fewer resources.
