WASHINGTON — The United Contractors, the Southern California Contractors Association, and the National Park Service (SCCA) are 2021 recipients of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association’s (ARTBA) highest honor—the “ARTBA Award.”  The awards were announced Sept. 27 during a ceremony at the association’s national convention in Pinehurst, N.C.

SCCA and United Contractors, the private sector honorees, were recognized for their outstanding work in preventing the repeal of revenue increases supporting California’s Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 (SB 1).  The 2018 voter referendum, Proposition 6, would have gutted SB 1’s 10-year, $54 billion investment in the state’s roads, bridges, public transit and safety enhancements.

A diverse coalition of transportation investment supporters, including the United Contractors and SCCA, mobilized a massive, multimillion dollar integrated communications, advertising, and voter education campaign.  On election day 2018, California voters soundly defeated Prop 6 by a 57 percent to 43 percent margin, preserving SB 1’s historic investment levels.

The National Park Service, the public sector recipient, was honored for its management and leadership in the renovation of the Arlington Memorial Bridge, which connects Arlington National Cemetery with Washington D.C., near the Lincoln Memorial.  The rehabilitation project was completed on time and on budget, and now has 75-year life span.  ARTBA member firms Kiewit and AECOM were the project team leads.

Established in 1960, the ARTBA Award recognizes individuals and organizations for outstanding contributions that have advanced the broad goals of the association.  Recipients have included more than 25 U.S. senators or representatives, two U.S. secretaries of transportation, several governors, and dozens of top leaders and executives from government and the private sector of the transportation construction industry.

The Washington, D.C.-based ARTBA brings together all facets of the transportation construction industry to responsibly advocate for infrastructure investment and policy that meet the nation’s need for safe and efficient travel.
