OMAHA, Neb. — Lloyd Brown has joined HDR as a senior strategic communications consultant helping to advance our focus on helping clients across North America manage communication and engagement on large infrastructure projects. He joins a rapidly growing group of over 140 strategic communication practitioners who work to deliver communications for our clients.

A well-known transportation industry leader, Brown is transitioning from a decade as director of communications for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, where the team he led was responsible for all facets of the AASHTO brand, outreach and public advocacy.

As a senior strategic communications consultant, Brown will work closely with HDR’s transportation market directors to provide strategic communications and advisory services to DOT clients. He will manage and lead strategic communication projects, direct social and political strategy development on projects, and offer executive-level advisory services to transportation agencies.

Brown brings a solutions-oriented perspective, informed by three decades of communications experience.

“I have a passion for innovative, strategic community engagement,” Brown said. “I hope to help agencies enhance their communication efforts by improving how they listen to affected communities and by focusing more effort on discussing the challenges being addressed by a particular project or program.”

Before his time at AASHTO, Brown served as director of communications for the Washington State Department of Transportation, where he led communications efforts on the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge and the Hood Canal Bridge replacement. Both projects required navigating difficult public interactions through consistent, creative and strategic communications. Brown also is a member of the Transportation Research Board’s Standing Committee on Public Engagement and Communications and he serves as an advisor to the TRB Committee Communications Coordinators Council.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Lloyd for over a decade in his role as the director of communications for AASHTO, and I’m excited for him to join our strategic communications team,” said Theresa McClure, HDR’s transportation strategic communications director. “He brings transportation agency experience, expert knowledge and unparalleled industry relationships, which will all serve our clients as they tackle major transportation challenges in the coming years.”
