PoreShield SME-PS Concrete Durability Enhancer to showcase benefits in real-world projects

INDIANAPOLIS (June 2, 2021) – The Indiana Soybean Alliance – PoreShield™ is excited to announce its participation in the Innovative Technology Demonstrations (ITD), a field program hosted by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Transportation System Preservation Technical Services Program (TSP-2).

“We are excited to be working with AASHTO TSP-2 to demonstrate how the patented technology of soy methyl ester-polystyrene (SME-PS) branded PoreShield works as a long-term concrete durability enhancer,” said Paul Imbrock, technical consultant for PoreShield. “The demonstration projects will show how PoreShield SME-PS is a cost-effective protection for bridge decks, roadways and precast structures that prevents future damage while protecting the environment and worker safety.”

The AASHTO TSP-2 Innovative Technology Demonstrations Program introduces new and innovative preservation materials and technologies to the owners of the nation’s highway systems. The program is documented by an independent consultant and managed by the ITD Working Group with TSP-2 oversight.

The Indiana Soybean Alliance – PoreShield SME-PS is participating in the ITD program to demonstrate how with one application, PoreShield SME-PS enhances concrete durability and offers long-term protection from moisture, salt and freeze/thaw damage. PoreShield SME-PS can be applied to vertical or horizontal concrete structures and used on all densities of concrete, new or old.

Unlike penetrating sealers, PoreShield SME-PS is absorbed into the pores of concrete by capillary action to block fluid absorption from the inside. As a self-sealing technology that remains viscous, PoreShield SME-PS fills pores and adjusts to new voids, protecting additional cracks or fissures as they form. Research and field use has demonstrated that PoreShield SME-PS extends the life of concrete five-to-nine times longer compared to untreated and provides 10 or more years of protection from salt (ion absorption), calcium oxychloride formation, moisture absorption, corrosion and freeze/thaw damage.

There are three PoreShield SME-PS TSP-2 ITD projects: highway joints, a bridge deck and a vertical concrete structure. The highway joint project is with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to treat a section of Interstate 65. For the demonstration, INDOT will purchase and contract the treatment of PCCP pavement joints and six-inch overspray. The bridge program is with Buchanan County, Iowa to treat a county bridge deck.  One additional project is being planned for a vertical concrete structure.

Implementation of the ITD program by the infrastructure owners through a participating independent consultant assures that demonstrations are unbiased. In addition, demonstrations and parameters for assessments are agreed to by all parties prior to implementation. Approval and oversight of the ITD program is coordinated with the independent consultant by the AASHTO TSP-2 Bridge Program facilitators.

About PoreShield

PoreShield SME-PS is a revolutionary concrete durability enhancer that protects concrete from the inside out. Where other technologies just coat the surface, PoreShield is absorbed deep into concrete pores, protecting concrete from premature damage. Created from a partnership between the Indiana Soybean Alliance and Purdue University, PoreShield is proven to stop deterioration in existing concrete infrastructure, making concrete last five-to-nine times longer. And as a preventative measure, PoreShield stands alone – providing maximum protection while reducing maintenance costs, replacements rates, and even lowering the carbon footprint with a non-toxic and hazard-free product profile.

About Indiana Soybean Alliance

The Indiana Soybean Alliance works to enhance the viability of Indiana soybean farmers through the effective and efficient investment of soybean checkoff funds that protect and promote the interest of Indiana soybean farmers. The ISA works to assist soybean farmers through its strategic initiatives of market development; environmental, social and economic sustainability; value creation and producer engagement. ISA is led by an elected, farmer board that directs investments of the soybean checkoff funds on behalf of more than 20,000 Indiana soybean farmers. Learn more at www.indianasoybean.com
