RICS Introduces Industry’s First BIM Certification in the UK

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has introduced the industry’s first manager certification for building information modelling (BIM).

The initiative has been created in response to the industry’s need for a standard to assess the skills of people using surveying equipment and construction professionals using BIM. It will also give a guarantee to customers that those with the certification are suitably qualified to carry out the job.

RICS said it acted because there was no industry-wide standard and a number of different methods were being used across the construction sector. It is also planning to introduce a BIM Certification for Facilities Managers and Geomatics professionals.

Construction professionals and quantity surveyors using BIM who want to apply for the certification will be assessed by an industry group. They will be required to write a case study about a BIM project they have worked on, to show their skills in BIM processes, initiation, collaboration and integration, and to supply a five-year CV of their work experience.

The initiative was welcomed by the Government BIM Task Group, which said: “We are delighted to see such a proactive response to raising awareness and capability in support of the BIM agenda through the development of a BIM Manager Certification.”
