Applied Bolting Technology

Applied Bolting Technology produces DuraSquirt DTIs (Direct Tension Indicators) that supply a bright orange indication when bolts have been tensioned, making tight bolts easy to see. DTIs are load cells that ensure compliance with bolting standards and specs. Torque, Turn-of-Nut and TCs can all produce false-positive tension, and regularly do: Torque scatter is ±40% for new bolts and worse for weathered. Relying on torque is optimism, at best. TCs are torque bolts that are adversely affected by cold or wet weather. Turn-of-Nut can be defeated by mispresenting turn angle, regardless of turn applied. DTIs read load. If a bolt is tight, a DTI will show it, independent of weather, torque, angle, tool or skill.

Steel Deck Institute

Since its founding in 1939, the Steel Deck Institute (SDI) has provided uniform industry standards for the engineering, design, manufacture, and field usage of steel floor and roof decks. Members of the SDI are manufacturers of steel roof and floor decks. The products they manufacture are primarily used to support overlying roofing materials or to serve as a permanent form and/or positive reinforcement for concrete floor slabs.

There are many advantages to using steel deck in roof and floor construction. These include physical properties such as structural strength, all-weather constructability, and fire resistance. Uniform quality, proven durability, and economic value have also long been known to be attributes of steel roof and floor deck. More recently, building designers have recognized the advantages of steel deck for its appearance, acoustical properties, and sustainability. The mission of the SDI is to promote these advantages and provide guidance in the proper usage of steel roof and floor deck.

AISC Steel Solutions Center

AISC is best known for its specifications and codes. But did you also know that we have a team of engineers who answer more than 150 technical questions every week—for free? Questions like these:

• Does the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings require that bolted moment connections be made slip-critical?

• Are plasma-cut bolt holes for bridge projects now acceptable when mechanically guided?

• I am designing a weld between a slotted HSS brace and a gusset plate. There will likely be a gap between the HSS material and the gusset plate for fit-up purposes. Should I increase the size of the fillet weld to account for the possibility of a gap?

Have a question of your own? AISC’s Steel Solutions Center is here to help!

ChromX

As the nation’s leading producer of rebar, Commercial Metals Company offers a variety of concrete reinforcement products at a range of corrosion-resistance levels. ChromX rebar provides a high-strength, corrosion-resistant concrete reinforcing line of long steel products in various grades and levels of corrosion resistance. Martensitic Microcomposite Formable Steel (MMFX) is the innovation behind all ChromX products. It is this proprietary steel microstructure, along with a patented chemical composition, that creates corrosion-resistant and high-strength properties within the bar, rather than a coating.

Designers can select the appropriate level of corrosion resistance and strength needed (available in grades 100 and 120) specifically targeted to the service life for the project. High strength and corrosion-resistant properties within the steel result in a reduction in construction costs, shortened build times, reduced congestion issues and improved safety. In addition, building codes and design guides through ACI, ICC and AASHTO, among others, are available in support of high-strength designs using ChromX products.
