Washington, DC – The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) announced today that it is expanding its research and thought leadership capabilities with the formation of the ACEC Research Institute.  The Institute replaces ACEC’s former Research and Management Foundation and will work to become the leading source of knowledge and thought leadership for creating a more sustainable, safe, secure and technically advanced built environment.

“ACEC’s membership is comprised of thousands of firms that represent the full scope of a vibrant industry that contributes billions of dollars to America’s economy every year, and improves our lives on a daily basis,” said ACEC President and CEO Linda Bauer Darr. “The ACEC Research Institute will provide our industry with cutting edge trend data, research and analysis to help firm owners make decisions and arm the Council with information to explain engineering’s essential value to a broad audience.”

The ACEC Research Institute’s mission is to deliver knowledge and business strategies that guide and elevate the engineering industry by:

  • Identifying, funding and providing industry wide research, forecasts, and trend analysis.
  • Capitalizing on the rapidly changing nature of technology and society to ensure a sustainable engineering industry.
  • Promoting the engineering profession’s essential value to society.
  • Inspiring future generations to solve the world’s most challenging problems through engineering.

To lead this effort, the Institute will be overseen by a Board of Directors that is reflective of our industry and is designed to strike a balance between firm size and practice area. Led by its Chairman, John Carrato, President & CEO of Alfred Benesch & Company, and Vice Chair Michael J. Carragher, President & CEO of VHB, the Institute’s Board includes ACEC Chair Mitch Simpler, as well as NAECE President-elect James Smith, CHA’s Chief Growth Officer/EVP Jay Wolverton, Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. President & CEO Steven Lefton, Stolfus & Associates President Elizabeth Stolfus and Terracon Consultants, Inc. President & CEO Gayle Packer. They are joined by Deltek’s President & CEO Mike Corkery, and Autodesk’s Global Vice President, AEC Business Strategy and Marketing, Nicolas Mangon.

“The engineering industry is at the forefront of designing solutions to some of the biggest challenges we face as a society,” said ACEC Research Institute Board Chair John Carrato.  “From emerging technologies that are changing the way we work, to global issues like climate change, engineers lead the way. We need to quantify benefits we deliver and analyze the challenges we face. The ACEC Research Institute will do just that.”

“For firm leaders like myself, the impact our industry has on society is seen every day, but there hasn’t been an organization that has allowed us to accurately measure that impact in real terms until now,” said ACEC Board Chair and Institute Board Member Mitch Simpler. “ACEC has long been the voice of the engineering industry with a respected education and advocacy program.  With the Institute, ACEC will become the authoritative voice in the built environment.”
