The 23-acre urban location, which includes the former IRS processing center, is poised to become a key component in the urban revitalization and recreation boom along the Ohio River.

COVINGTON, Ky. — Woolpert is a member of the Cooper Carry planning and design team selected by the city of Covington, Ky., to provide site assessment and analysis and to engage the Northern Kentucky community in the conceptional design of a 23-acre site on the banks of the Ohio River.

Cooper Carry, an Atlanta-based architecture firm, is assessing the market and programming the use and master plan of the West Rivercenter Boulevard site, which includes the IRS processing center that closed last fall and is less than 300 yards east of Clay Wade Bailey Bridge. The conceptual plan for the site, which benefited from nearly a year of public engagement, was presented in December to the city of Covington.

Woolpert—an Ohio-based, international architecture, engineering and geospatial (AEG) firm—is providing environmental, transportation and utility infrastructure planning and design, as well as civil engineering, and is assisting with urban design analysis for the multimillion-dollar project.

“We’ve provided a comprehensive assessment package to Cooper Carry to support their conceptual design,” said Bruce Rankin, Woolpert senior landscape architect and project manager. “There’s a lot happening on the Kentucky riverfront, and we’re involved in pretty much all of it—from surveying to master planning, to assisting with grant applications, to engineering, to final designs and permitting. We’re excited to be part of this project, which is sure to become an important economic driver for the region.”

Woolpert also is providing comprehensive engineering and landscape architectural design services to the Covington Riverfront Park project and is providing survey, civil and structural engineering for the nearby Newport SkyWheel.

Planning for the Covington riverfront site is scheduled to be completed this spring.
