Michael McNamara joins HNTB as senior director of rail and transit systems for eastern United States

With more than 40 years of program management and engineering experience, McNamara has helped achieve significant service improvements for rail system throughout the U.S. and Canada.

NEW YORK  – Michael McNamara, PE, joined HNTB Corporation as regional senior director of rail and transit systems and vice president. Based in the firm’s King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, office, McNamara provides program management and engineering oversight for HNTB’s major rail and transit projects throughout the eastern United States.

“Mike brings extensive leadership and program management experience for complex rail and transit systems gained from his work on major projects across the U.S. and Canada,” said Michael Sweeney, PE, HNTB’s eastern U.S. president. “His knowledge and expertise provides transit agencies with a valuable resource to help meet the challenges they face today and into the future.”

McNamara comes to HNTB with more than 40 years of experience in the design, construction and maintenance of railroads and transit systems, specializing in railway systems engineering. In the course of his career, he has performed design and oversight for most U.S. passenger railways.

Most recently, McNamara served as president of transit and rail systems for another national consulting firm with responsibility for design, construction and maintenance of railroads and transit systems.

Among the many significant projects managed by McNamara during his career is the capacity enhancement program for the Portal Bridge in New Jersey, a key Northeast Corridor link used by New Jersey Transit and Amtrak.

A registered professional engineer in 15 states and Ontario, Canada, McNamara earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Drexel University and a master’s degree in systems engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

McNamara is chairman of the Pennsylvania State University Rail Transportation Engineering program’s advisory board. He also is a member of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association.
