Raleigh, N.C.- Gannett Fleming recently completed engineering and construction for the $40 million R. Steven Biggs Regional Wastewater Pretreatment Facility (WWPTF) in Clayton, North Carolina. A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 10 celebrated the innovation and success of the state-of-the-art facility with community leaders and global health care company, Novo Nordisk.Novo Nordisk selected Gannett Fleming to provide turnkey project delivery services for development of the 8-acre site. The team utilized a phased engineer-procure-construct (EPC) delivery approach to meet the 17-month schedule requirement in alignment with Novo Nordisk’s new $2 billion Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) manufacturing facility.

Services included design, permitting, procurement, and construction installation for multiple facilities, numerous treatment tanks, and solids handling and support equipment. The facility employs a fully automated process control system with various sensors integrated throughout. In addition, it features 100% equipment redundancy to protect against equipment failure and ensure optimal treatment to meet stringent wastewater discharge limits required in North Carolina.

“This pretreatment facility is a critical public infrastructure resource for growth in Clayton, Johnson County, and the region,” said David Broughton, Gannett Fleming project management director. “With the ability to treat 450,000 gallons of waste per day and with more than 5.4 million gallons of total tank volume, the WWPTF not only meets the needs of Novo Nordisk but can be expanded to serve as a shared infrastructure asset to future industrial businesses in the region.”
