Gannett Fleming Secures Multiple ENR Regional Awards

Gannett Fleming recently landed three projects on the regional Engineering-News Record (ENR) 2019 Best Projects winners list.

Sept. 23, 2019 (Harrisburg, Pa.) Global infrastructure and engineering firm Gannett Fleming recently landed three projects on the regional Engineering-News Record (ENR) 2019 Best Projects winners list. 

The 2019 ENR MidAtlantic Best Projects winners include Gannett Fleming’s Route 30 Landslide Remediation project, which won Best Small Project, and Mt. Soma Reservoir Design and Construction project, which won Best Water/Environment Project. ENR New York’s Best Projects winners include the firm’s New Jersey Turnpike Interchange 14A Improvements project, which won an Award of Merit in the Highway/Bridge category. 

Route 30 Landslide Remediation project: After a landslide and collapse of Route 30 near Pittsburgh, a key travel artery for 30,000 daily commuters, Gannett Fleming worked around-the-clock with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to deliver a comprehensive landslide remediation design and bid package. With quick acceptance of the design and through emergency construction procedures, the team restored mobility to the region within three months. They constructed an anchored retaining wall and durable rock embankment to provide long-term stability of the roadway for the next 100 years and restored peace of mind to the residents living within the slide-prone region.

Mt. Soma Reservoir Design and Construction project: The Mt. Soma Reservoir is the largest Maryland dam project in the past 30 years and marks the first installation of a bituminous geomembrane (BGM) on a dam embankment in the East Coast, setting the standard for the design of water storage reservoirs in the U.S. Fortifying a dependable backup water supply for more than 20,000 residents, the 90-million-gallon reservoir features a 62-foot-high earthen embankment with a 20-foot-wide crest. The BGM liner saved an estimated $450,000 in construction costs and maximizes sustainability with features like man-made floating wetlands to reduce algae-promoting nutrients in stored water, as well as solar ultrasonic algae control and solar-powered water mixing systems that eliminate up to 90% of existing algae.

New Jersey Turnpike Interchange 14A Improvements project: Handling more than 50,000 vehicles each day, the Interchange 14A connection between the Hudson County Extension and New Jersey Route 440, Port Jersey Boulevard, and Bayonne’s streets received the label of New Jersey’s most problematic northern interchange. Retained by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, Gannett Fleming studied, designed, and provided construction oversight for improvements that relieved traffic congestion, increased toll plaza capacity by 15% to improve interchange traffic flow, accommodated planned development in the area, improved access to the waterfront port district to encourage economic activity, and enhanced safety. Improvements include replacement bridges, retaining walls, sign structures, geometric enhancements, highway lighting, traffic signals, utility relocations, drainage improvements, a modern roundabout, new toll lanes, and a new electronic toll collection facility.
