Stantec Hires Kelley Coyner as Mobility Innovation Leader to Bring Smart Mobility Projects to Life

Arlington, VA (June 19, 2019) NYSE, TSX:STN: Stantec has announced that Kelley Coyner, a widely recognized pioneer in smart mobility, has joined the firm as Mobility Innovation Leader. This new global position will guide Stantec’s growing smart mobility business, focusing on partnerships and products needed to launch new smart mobility strategies, programs, and deployments.

Coyner is the former Executive Director of the Northern Virginia Transportation, Commission, Senate-confirmed CEO for Research and Special Program Administration at the US Department of Transportation, and a Fellow and Adjunct Professor of smart mobility at George Mason University. Her technical and policy expertise has been honed and applied through her work at MIT, Harvard, the Coast Guard Academy, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Volpe Transportation Center.

Since 2017 Coyner has been CEO of her own firm, Mobility e3 (Me3), which has had a key role in the development, funding, and assessment of major autonomous vehicle (AV) shuttle pilot projects at Fort Bragg, the City of Arlington, and Las Vegas and developing best practices in planning, safety, and operations of AV shuttles. Coyner and the Me3 team have advised communities and companies globally on deploying Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) technology, safety and security, and smart mobility planning.

Stantec has a firm foothold in the smart mobility space, having launched and worked on early AV and CV testbeds – Active-Aurora in Edmonton, AB, and the CAVTECH Edge Computing Test Bed in Nashville, TN. Stantec was the first firm to bring an AV to North America through the GoMentum Station testbed in Concord, CA. The firm’s smart mobility team has also engaged in feasibility studies and AV transit shuttle planning and pilots across North America.

As jurisdictions continue to explore the introduction of AVs, the development of safety standards, best practices, new technologies and analytic tools will guide the way. This includes ongoing investment in centers of excellence, AV test beds, programs that safely evaluate vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure technology, zero emission buses, electric charging networks, mobility as a service/mobility on demand, assistive transportation technologies, and  tools to manage congestion and capacity on the valuable curbsides and sidewalks.

Coyner’s mandate at Stantec includes creating productive partnerships across public, private and nonprofit organizations to coordinate program delivery, establishing transparent safety standards and practices, and deploying technologies that will be essential to advancing smart mobility. She will build on her work on advanced mobility initiatives at CityTech Collaborative and the City of Chicago, Ulupono Initiative in Hawaii, AAA of North California, Munich Re of North America, APTA, and the American Planning Association.

A law graduate from the University of Virginia, Coyner has also held positions within the American Public Transportation Association, the Center for Public Health and Homeland Security at the University of Maryland, The Nature Conservancy, and the Eno Center for Transportation.

In addition to Stantec’s infrastructure and smart mobility teams, Coyner will collaborate with experts from Stantec’s Urban Places, Buildings, and Power groups to create mobility solutions that solve the needs of communities through a holistic approach, that integrates with smart cities strategies.

She will be based in Stantec’s Arlington, VA office.
