Bechtel, a global leader in project management, engineering, procurement, and construction, has received full notice to proceed for the construction of the Train 6 expansion of the Sabine Pass Liquefaction (SPL) project in Louisiana. The facility is owned and operated by Cheniere Energy Inc.

The work on the SPL expansion includes construction of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) train and tie-in to the existing facilities. The expansion will add 4.5 million tonnes of LNG per year to the current 22.5 million tonnes plant capacity.

“We are pleased to reach a positive Final Investment Decision and issue full notice to proceed to Bechtel to proceed with construction of Sabine Pass Train 6, continuing our close partnership which has spanned over a decade,” said David Craft, Cheniere’s Senior Vice President, Engineering and Construction. “We thank Bechtel for their continued commitment to teamwork and execution, which has resulted in a market-leading track record of designing, constructing, and commissioning liquefaction trains safely and ahead of schedule at both Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi.”

“We are honored to continue our partnership with Cheniere, who has led the industry in the development and delivery of LNG facilities in the United States,” said Darren Mort, Bechtel’s LNG general manager. “We are very proud of the work that we have achieved together since we started working at this facility in 2006 and which now includes 6 operational LNG trains on the US Gulf Coast. This expansion demonstrates that building strong relationships with owners, contractors, suppliers, and local communities is key to the successful construction of large-scale LNG projects.”

Since 2006, Bechtel has delivered the construction, expansion, and modification of the Sabine Pass LNG complex, supporting Cheniere in successfully converting the initial receiving terminal into a bidirectional facility that allows them to liquefy and export U.S natural gas or regasify foreign-sourced LNG, depending on market conditions.

Since 2015, Bechtel has delivered 14 large-scale LNG production trains around the world. These facilities are now supplying over 61 million tonnes of LNG each year to global energy markets, or enough energy to power more than 85 million homes.  Today, Bechtel-built facilities produce more than 30 percent of the world’s total LNG capacity.
