Three Gannett Fleming Projects Win ACEC National Awards
(Harrisburg, Pa.) Gannett Fleming received three National Recognition Awards during the 2019 American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Engineering Excellence Awards Gala, May 7, in Washington, D.C. The honored projects include the Bel Air Impoundment project, the New Jersey Turnpike Interchange 14A Improvements project, and the Route 30 Landslide Remediation project.
Accredited as Maryland’s largest approved new dam project in the past 30 years, Gannett Fleming provided design, permitting, and construction services for Maryland American Water’s Bel Air Impoundment project, which was recently dedicated and renamed the Mt. Soma Reservoir. The innovative design includes a bituminous geomembrane liner that creates a watertight barrier inside the 2,025-foot-long dam embankment and impoundment floor, the first of its kind on the East Coast. The 90-million-gallon reservoir serves as a reliable backup water supply for more than 14,000 residents. This project also recently won ACEC Maryland’s Outstanding Project Award.
Gannett Fleming provided preliminary engineering, environmental studies, final design, and construction management services for the New Jersey Turnpike Interchange 14A Improvements project for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. Major outcomes of the $300-million project include reduced traffic congestion for approximately 50,000 motorists per day, improved access to the waterfront port district to encourage economic activity, and increased toll plaza capacity by 15% to improve interchange traffic flow. The project previously won ACEC New Jersey’s Grand Honor Award and the New Jersey Alliance for Action’s 2015 Distinguished Engineering Award.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) enlisted Gannett Fleming to provide final design and construction consultation services for the Route 30 Landslide Remediation project. A team of Gannett Fleming and PennDOT engineers proactively evacuated nearby residents just hours before a landslide crumbled the Route 30 roadway. Gannett Fleming quickly turned around a comprehensive landslide remediation design and bid package in 10 days and the highway reopened in just 80 days for the 30,000 motorists that travel through daily. Previous awards include ACEC Pennsylvania’s Diamond Award for Best Panel for the project, the American Society of Civil Engineers Pittsburgh Section’s 2018 Award of Merit and the Engineer’s Society of Western Pennsylvania’s 2018 Emergency Remediation Project of the Year award.
