Nature of Position:
The AASHTO Deputy Director is the second most senior person on the AASHTO leadership team. The Deputy Director reports to the Executive Director and assists with the overall successful management of the association. Priority areas and responsibilities are provided in more detail below.
The Deputy Director plans, organizes, coordinates, and leads the staff, programs, and activities under his/her purview.
Working closely with the Executive Director, the AASHTO Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Strategic Management Committee, the Deputy Director assists in the effective conduct of the association’s internal and external affairs and in the formulation and implementation of the association’s mission and strategic plan. The Deputy Director provides guidance and support to the Board, committee and council leadership.
The Deputy Director serves as a liaison between AASHTO and a variety of external agencies and organizations and is responsible for strengthening AASHTO’s position as the source of technical, legislative, operational, regulatory, and research expertise for the industry. The Deputy Director must serve as an effective spokesperson before all venues and audiences including Congress, state legislatures, government agencies, other public forums and the media to further public comprehension of AASHTO’s official positions and to promote the adoption and implementation of policies favorable to Association members.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of leading people and successfully managing programs. A minimum of 15 years of progressively increasing responsibility in organizational management is required. Leadership experience in a state department of transportation and/or trade association is preferred. This position requires a broad understanding of all modes of transportation at the federal, state, or local level of government, and an in-depth knowledge of at least one mode. A sound understanding of transportation legislative and regulatory process at the federal and state levels is also necessary, and management, business and partnership development skills are required. An advanced level understanding of management and business practices, public affairs, and communication skills is essential to this position. A bachelor’s degree in business administration, economics, public administration, public policy, engineering or another field related to AASHTO’s core operations is required, and evidence of a higher degree of professional development, such as postgraduate education, is preferred.
