Anchorage, AK, NYSE, TSX:STN: Stantec—a global architecture, engineering, and design firm with three offices in Alaska—received the Governor’s Safety Award of Excellence on April 3, 2019. The award is presented to Alaska organizations—including companies, government entities, and non-profits—that demonstrate distinction in the safety and health of their personnel, the environment, assets, and reputation that promotes superior corporate citizenship.

The award criteria include the organization’s safety performance, injury/environmental investigation, commitment of both management and employees, and health safety and environmental programs. Awards are based on health and safety statistics from 2016 to 2018.

In the past three years, Stantec’s Alaska offices had zero recordable injury and illness cases and zero environmental incidents. The firm’s Safer Together program is an important factor in reduced workplace injuries. In the award nomination, Stantec described the program this way: “The goal of Safer Together is to shift our safety culture to one where everyone works together to be safe; at work, at home, and in the communities we serve.”

“Being named one of the recipients of the Governor’s Safety Award of Excellence is an honor and speaks to how we value our most important asset—our employees,” said Tim Vig, Stantec senior principal in Anchorage. “It’s a recognition of a number of programs that we’ve developed over time that impact each employee. Having a leadership team that sets the example and having engaged employees shows in the safety record. As an office leader, this record is one of the things I am most proud of.”

Other important highlights of the firm’s safety program:

  • Stop Work Authority: All Stantec employees are responsible, authorized, and required to stop work immediately if they encounter an unsafe act or condition.
  • Hazard Recognition Assessment Control: The program includes Risk Management Strategy forms, which are used to identify, record, and implement corrective actions in the workplace or on the job site.
  • Office space: The firm’s new office location in Anchorage features safe parking, enhanced building/workplace security, and ergonomically appropriate layout and workstations.
