Quake Changes Christchurch Crime Patterns

Crime maps reveal a major shift in trouble spots throughout Christchurch since the earthquakes. Police are using computer modelling to identify hotspots and push more front-line staff into the right areas at the right times.

Mapping shows police have been called to more incidents in suburbs such as Riccarton, Merivale and Addington since the central city went off limits after the February 2011 quake. It also shows crime around the city’s malls has increased, and several said they were busier post-quake and boosting security.
