Finley Engineering Group (FINLEY), recognized nationally and internationally for its expertise in complex bridge projects, is excited to announce Zachary White and Isabel McLeod will join FINLEY this summer as part of FINLEY’s Summer Internship Program.

Zachary will graduate from the University of Florida (UF) this spring with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, and begin his master’s degree from UF in the fall. Most recently, he has worked as a Teaching Assistant with the University of Florida and an Engineer Intern with Norfolk Southern Corporation (NSC). As an Engineer Intern with NSC, Zachary aided in the design of prospective industrial sites along Norfolk Southern Railroads. He is well-versed in AutoCAD and MATLAB among many other engineering software packages. Zachary is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

“I’m very much looking forward to working at FINLEY with a group of engineers that have many years of complex bridge design experience,” said Zachary. “I’m excited to apply topics learned in courses such as prestressed concrete, highway bridge design, and advanced structural analysis methods to real world problems… Working for a firm that provides full scale design solutions around the world is truly a blessing.”

Isabel will graduate with her master’s degree in civil engineering from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in the Spring of 2020. As a student at CWRU, Isabel will be coming from Cleveland, Ohio to take part in FINLEY’s Summer Internship Program. Most recently, she has worked as a Bridge Design Intern at the Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works where she completed stage 2-3 plans in AutoCAD for a 60-ft span concrete box beam bridge. She also utilized beam analysis software, prepared bearing design spreadsheets, completed rebar calculations, and much more to aid in bridge design during her time with Cuyahoga County. She is the Vice President of Design on CWRU’s Steel Bridge Project Team.

“I am thrilled to be selected for FINLEY’s internship program, and to join a team of hardworking engineers who challenge each other every day,” said Isabel. “I have learned about the importance of constructability through my work on the Case Western Reserve University Steel Bridge Team, and I’m excited to apply this knowledge towards FINLEY’s mission to bridge the gap between engineering design and construction.”

Designed to provide promising students an opportunity to develop their skills and grow professionally, FINLEY’s summer internship program offers two paid summer internships each year. The interns are assigned to one of our design and/or construction engineering projects. Interns work at an entry level bridge engineering position and are given modeling assignments that are suitable for their level of experience and education.

FINLEY integrates the construction methodology into the design. To accomplish this, FINLEY utilizes full bridge information modeling (BrIM) using Autodesk, SOFiSTiK and LUSAS software. This software dramatically reduces the time spent in modeling bridge projects including the variation of cross sections, construction stages, vehicle loading, and post tensioning.

Our philosophy is based on teamwork, ethical conduct and mutual trust; we are dedicated to fostering a work environment that excites, enriches and personally rewards the individual. We believe in personal performance improvement through hands on project immersion, constructive evaluations and one-on-one mentoring.

“We’ve had an internship program at FINLEY for over 15 years,” said Craig Finley, P.E., President, FINLEY. “It’s a great opportunity for a young engineer to gain bridge design and construction engineering experience on projects around the world as a full-time participant on FINLEY’s Team. Over the years we’ve had some great interns and believe that Zach and Isabel will carry on that high standard. We’re excited to have them for the summer, and are expecting great things from them!”
