Walnut Creek, CA, NYSE, TSX: STN: Stantec, a leading global design and engineering firm, has welcomed a strategic addition to its water team in the US Pacific region – Joseph (Joe) Ortiz, PE. Ortiz joins Stantec with more than 30 years of experience in design, construction, and management of water systems, including water treatment plants, large diameter pipelines, pumping stations, and groundwater development projects. Based in Walnut Creek, California, Ortiz will support the growth of the water conveyance sector in pursuit and delivery of fit-for-purpose solutions key to addressing clients’ unique needs throughout the water infrastructure lifecycle.

Ortiz brings notable experience working for the three largest water utilities in the state of California – the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Most recently with SFPUC, Ortiz was instrumental in overseeing multiple, large scale jobs, including the Bay Division Pipeline No. 5 Project, the ongoing Regional Groundwater Storage and Recovery, and Bioregional Habitat Restoration ventures. Similarly, Ortiz managed several high-profile projects in his time at EBMUD where he also served as the liaison between local property owners and interacted with various state and federal regulatory agencies.

“Moving water from source to user is more complex than it seems on the surface. Joe brings 30+ years of experience working for public agencies and as a consultant supporting large civil and conveyance projects in the San Francisco Bay Area. We’re excited to have Joe join our team as we continue to develop creative solutions to improve and expand this critical infrastructure,” said Stephen Robinson, water area leader at Stantec.

Holding a Master of Engineering in structural engineering, mechanics, and materials (SEMM), with an emphasis in Earthquake Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley; Ortiz focused his graduate research on the seismic effects on water structures. Additionally, he is a Certified Structural Specialist for FEMA Urban Search and Rescue and has used his expertise to aid in the recovery process following Hurricanes Ike and Gustav in 2008 and Hurricanes Harvey and Irma in 2017. Ortiz also holds a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from California State University and is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of California.
