Four Students Take Top Honors in Annual Video Contest on America’s Transportation Infrastructure
(WASHINGTON) – High school students from Arizona and Nebraska, a graduate student from Texas Southern University in Houston and a post-graduate student at Regis University in Boston are the 2018 winners of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association’s (ARTBA) 8th Annual “Student Transportation Video Contest.” They will each receive a $500 cash prize.
The association received 21 submissions from students across the country, representing 14 states, in two categories: general transportation and safety. Sponsored by ARTBA’s Research and Education (RED) Division, the contest aims to raise awareness about infrastructure issues by challenging students to develop a brief video exploring various topics relating to America’s transportation network.
Submission topics included road safety, funding public transportation, bridge maintenance, and automated vehicles.
The competition was advertised on college scholarship websites, posted on online video contest sites, shared with Summer Transportation Institutes, film and engineering programs, debate leagues and Girl Scout troops across America, as well as Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC) and ARTBA RED members. It was also shared on ARTBA’s social media accounts. ARTBA members reviewed the submissions and selected the winners.
The 2018 winning videos are:
General Transportation Category
Age Group One (Elementary, Middle or High School Students)
“The Arizona Public Transportation Question” by Alexander Zapata. Alexander is a senior at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz. His video highlights how residents rely on the city’s light rail system, as well as the challenges of funding its public transportation system.
Age Group Two (Post-Secondary/College/Graduate Level)
“The Shift Toward Cycling” by Astrid March. Astrid is pursuing her master’s degree in nursing at Regis University Boston in Weston, Mass. Her video describes the increasing demand for bicycle infrastructure and the benefits of building that network.
Safety Category
Age Group One (Elementary, Middle or High School Students)
“Road Safety” by Kailee Matlock. Kailee, a senior at Bennington High School in Bennington, Neb., spotlighted a recent car accident and the safety features of her car and safe driving practices she employed that helped her walk away from the accident unharmed.
Age Group Two (Post-Secondary/College/Graduate Level)
“The Cyclist’s Guide to Transportation Safety” by Mchaji Celestaine. Mchaji is a pharmacy major at Texas Southern University in Houston. Mchaji’s animated video discusses the top three causes of bicycling accidents and what people can do to prevent them.
