(WASHINGTON) – The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) is adding a key player to its team with the hiring of Katie Chimelewski as director of safety and certification, a newly created position.  Most recently, she spent 13 years in a variety of safety leadership and advocacy roles at CSX in Jacksonville, Fla.

She will be responsible for managing operations and expanding industry participation in the American National Standards Institute-accredited Safety Certification for Transportation Project ProfessionalsTM (SCTPP) program.  Established in late 2016, the SCTPP aims to boost the hazard awareness and risk management skills of all transportation project professionals who are in positions of influence—from project inception through completion—to cause a major decline in safety incidents.  Nearly 275 individuals have already become “safety certified.”

Chimelewski will also be dedicated to the administration and execution of several federal safety-related training contracts, including the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse.

At CSX, Chimelewski held positions in community affairs, project impact mitigation, public safety, media relations and philanthropy.  As director of community affairs and safety, she led a successful campaign to help educate the public on highway-rail intersection safety.  She also served as a director on the Operation Lifesaver board, helping drive unique safety training and messaging aimed at motorists and pedestrian safety on or around railroad tracks.

A native of Florida, Chimelewski has a B.A. in communications from West Virginia University.  She resides in Washington, D.C.
